Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Moldova

Moldova is a tiny European country, neighbouring Romania and Ukraine. While the country is surrounded by land, it is located in close proximity to the Black Sea.

Its capital city, Chisinau, is right at the centre of the country. The country has a strong rural feel, consisting mainly of farmland. The countryside is dotted with small villages and features many lakes.

You can find hostels close to the main landmarks, most of which are very affordable. Try to search for a hostel near one of the many rivers and streams running through the country.

There are also many valleys in the area, due to the limestone base having eroded over the years. The Carpathian Mountains are located close to the Moldavian Plateau, which is a part of the mountainous region of the country.

If you like rivers, you'll want to visit the Nistru and Prut rivers which run through the country. Other bodies of water include the 3,500 small and larger-sized lakes in the area that are used by the farming communities to supplement their agricultural yields, as well as for fishing and farm animals.

For a taste of the local flora and fauna, you can visit nearly any part of Moldova. Over three-quarters of the country has a rich black soil which can grow a variety of rare plants.

While the southern part of the country is less fertile, there are many exotic species of rare grasses which grow on the steppes. In fact, the country has two main types of landscape – grassland and forest.

The national parks in Moldova feature over 2,300 species of plants as well as animals, including many species of birds, rodents, ducks, wildcats, foxes and deer. Other natural destinations in the country include the five science-focused reservations, including the Moldova-Codru Reservation and the Land of Beeches.

You should also visit the Lower Prut and the Royal Forest. If you want to check out the underwater life of the region, make sure you visit Lagorlac Reservation.

Moldova is known for its wine. In fact, the winemaking regions near the Black Sea are world famous. The countryside features green hills and the valleys abound with vineyards.

The wine industry in Moldova has a centuries-old tradition and is a key part of the local culture. Even the shape of the country as seen from above resembles a bunch of grapes, a fact Moldavians love to point out.

You can visit the many wineries in the country, taste some fresh grape wine, and watch the history of the winemaking process.

Other places to visit in the country include the open air museum and archaeological complex known as Old Orhei, located between two ancient hamlets about 60km from the capital city.

About 45km from Orhei is Saharna Monastery, which is both a nature reserve and an ancient historical site. It also has a 670-hectare forest area. This isn’t the only forested part of the country, though. The village of Donici near the capital, for instance, is also located within a forest.

If you love history, architecture and sightseeing, the Manuc Bei Estate, the Ralli Manor House, and the Alexander Pushkin Monument which dates from 1885 are also must-see destinations.
