I grew up in Newcastle and it is far away from everything else. However, I had the most magnificent childhood in Newcastle, as there was always so much to explore. You could ride your horses and bikes just about anywhere -- I loved it.
Newcastle is a great night out, shame it's so far away from everywhere!
Newcastle There isn't a lot to see here and the shops are pretty crappy. I'd only bother if you need somewhere to stop on your way through to Scotland or on your way back to England.
Cnocnafeola Centre - Mourne Hostel in Kilkeel I stayed here for a week in September 2004. It was lovely. A kitchen is available to guests and there is a grocery store about 100 yards from the hostel. It is very modern and comfortable with a friendly manager.
Cnocnafeola Centre - Mourne Hostel in Kilkeel This hostel has a very friendly staff and lovely facilities. It's a little out of the way, but the location is beautiful and it's only a short, cheap taxi ride from Kilkeel. The center was started by the community out of love, not for the money. The ladies were very helpful, and overall it's a pleasant place to stay.
Newcastle Hostel in Newcastle Easy to find. Common areas are maintained, and it's very clean and comfortable. Great breakfast included.
Newcastle Hostel in Newcastle This hostel is unpretentious, with a friendly manageress and laid back atmosphere. The basic facilities offer everything needed for a stay, the kitchen and drying rooms being really good. Too many cooks don't spoil the broth in here! The location is very central yet quiet, except for the sound of the sea when the weather is rough!
Newcastle Hostel in Newcastle Possibly the worst hostel I have stayed in. The owners lack general manners and slammed the door behind us as we left. General conditions where ok, and the location is good, but just let down by the staff.
Newcastle Hostel in Newcastle The warden was extremely rude and unwelcoming, for a youth hostel it doesn't seem to want the youth. We did get a bit noisy on the first night but no damage was being caused. The owner started screaming and swearing at us calling us children and said she was going to threat us like children. then proceeded to threaten to throw us out telling us to "get out as she had enough." No warning was given, a simple "folks your getting a bit noisy can you keep it down" would have been enough for us to quieten down. next morning we were able to talk to her to let us stay the following night we ensured we didn't make any noise and the next morning when we were eating our breakfast and making lunches she came in bulling about banging things. I offered to help her take out the rubbish and she snapped at me. I've stayed in many hostels all over ireland and scotland and I have never been threatened in such a manner before. We could understand if it was a high quality new hostel and didn't want to
Newcastle Hostel in Newcastle I provisionally booked for one night for two. Turned up to find hostel closed. Rang door bell and a woman answered, she said she didn't have to answer the door, and said if i wanted to come in i would need to go in now. I asked my friend who was in the car what he wanted to do, during which she interrupted me again, i said i was asking him at which point she shut the door on me. We didnt go back because considering this was the first person i had met in Newcastle, she was rather rude. We stayed in a b+b and was made to feel most welcome.
