Since I am from Hamburg, Germany, Groningen reminds me of my old town Bremen, which is not really far away from Groningen. Groningen is a really, really friendly village. It has everything you need, it isn't that expensive, and you can chill the whole day in the silence of the city. If you want to party, Groningen is one of the biggest student cities in the whole Netherlands. You can party there in the middle of the week until 6 o'clock in the morning! The Village isn't that big, though full of beautiful blonde girls. I had a great week in Groningen and will be going there again in May. For people who where in Amsterdam, and thought that its a bit to crowded, go to Groningen and have almost the same enjoyments and it's not that crowded!
Groningen is a very good place for relaxing and for not much money.
I was an exchange student in Groningen for six months. I can tell you that city rocked my world -- I gotta come back someday.
I lived in Groningen for two years and would love to go back, but there were times I felt like an outsider. Coffee shops were my favorite thing and their love of music.
I stayed in Groningen a couple weeks ago. I am 32 so the whole pubs / student thing doesn't do any thing for me anymore...
Q- Would I stay here again. A- Yes, for 2 days instead of 3.
3 stars...average if you're not picky.
Groningen is a sweet town - definitely worth a 25 euro train ride from Amsterdam. Lots of Pubs, big student population, this town rocks until 6 in the morning.
Groningen I could have seen the same stuff anywhere else in Holland. It's fun if you're under 30 and drink, I am neither.
Simplon Youth Hostel in Groningen Brill place to stop. Staff are friendly. Two minutes from town centre.
Simplon Youth Hostel in Groningen During a folk singers' meeting I stayed there for several days. It is very clean and inexpensive, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the abundant breakfast I appreciated very much. It was not very loud in the nights. I am afraid that I fought back unconsciously by snoring heavily as I was told in the morning. All things considered I can highly recommend it.
Simplon Youth Hostel in Groningen I stayed here for one night only, and it's a very good hostel. Staff are friendly, the town centre is really nearby, breakfast is okay, showers are good and the rooms are clean and the decoration is really nice. The only bad thing I can say about this hostel is that it was a bit loud when a group of students arrived in the middle of the night.
Stayokay Scheemda Hostel in Scheemda Scheemda is well off the beaten track from Netherland's main attractions (although the fabulous Groningen is not far away), so I can image the only people who'd really stay here are school groups and outdoor types. It was very quiet when I arrived, and had a full dorm to myself, but did get a friendly welcome from the owner, and despite there being less that a dozen guests, they put on a good breakfast with cereal, yogurt, and lots of bread. The hostel is also a borg -- a typical aristocratic residence of the Groningen region -- so you can sample a little of the local history whilst you're there too. Place is well kept, comfortable rooms, and I had a good night's sleep.
Simplon Youth Hostel in Groningen Well as you can see, I'm Dutch. But anyway, I stayed here one night as well. We were with a lot of people and we were going out that night. Normally a youth hostel is closed after 3 o'clock, but this hostel was open the whole night. So we all could go in and go out whenever we want to. That was great and it was no problem at all. The staff is very friendly, it is clean and inexpensive. I recommend it. Maybe when I'm going to Groningen again, I'll stay there!
