The great thing about Mexico City is that you can get your own hotel room for about 200 pesos (about $20 USD), which is only a little more than the hostels, if you want more privacy. Though I believe most of them are in the Centro Histórico, which tends to die down at night (though that's great if you want to sleep in peace and quiet), as opposed to a place like the Zona Rosa (where I would have preferred to stay, since it's close to the gay clubs) where the hotels are more expensive. Of course, meeting people is much easier in the hostels. If you get tired of all the craziness of the city, and your feet are tired of walking through all the street markets (which are fun) and museums and stuff, I can also recommend taking half a day at Xochimilco, south of the city (or is it north? -- I just know it's outside the city) and renting one of those crazily painted boats. Don't forget a bottle of Tequila, some limes and salt, so that you can take shots while floating lazily down the…
I loved Mexico City -- felt very safe.
El Cenote Azul in Mexico City … If you're planning a stay in Mexico City consider this place. It's about twenty minutes by train out of the city centre but it is worth it. Mexico City can be a little crazy when you first arrive and it is nice to stay in an interesting neighborhood, I arrived late at night a little worse for wear and the staff were so friendly and helpful. The decor is eclectic, the food is great and it is a cafe during the afternoon and some evenings. It is close to the university and is a gathering place for many students and young people to eat, meet and listen to great music. The rooms are very comfortable too. Absolutely loved this place and the people who worked there -- I even came back after a short trip down south.
Hostel Maguey in Mexico City … Cool hostel, the best one in mexico.
Hostel Maguey in Mexico City … If you come to Mexico you must stay here. Why? Because if you do not, you are losing a chance to share part of everyone's culture, and having nice chats with interesting people. This place has the best staff ever.
Hostel Versalles 104 in Mexico City … very friendly host couple. helpful and easy going. never seen such a nice and comfortable hostel. the place to be in mexico city!
Mexico City Hostel in Mexico City … This is the only hostel I have stayed at anywhere. It was clean and the staff was friendly available and helpful. The location is excellent (in the heart of mexico city) but can be noisy even at night as it is very near the Zocalo. Overall it was a great first time hostel experience.
Coyote Flaco Backpackers in Mexico City … Best hostel ever! Clean, Friendly Staff, and Secure. Highly Recommended.
Hostal Cuija Coyoacan in Mexico City … This is a lovely place, impeccably clean, a beautiful garden, and a delicious home cooked breakfast is included in the price. The staff are friendly and helpful and the area is safe to wander about it -- don't miss the amazing taco stand under the bridge near the metro station!
Hostal Mansión Havre Hostel in Mexico City … I had a great time at the hostel. It has a good location. Zona Rosa is like the tourist area in the city. The personnel were professional and friendly. They helped me and I had a wake-up call everyday on time all the time.
Bed & Breakfast Mexico in Mexico City … This is a really friendly hostel. The people running it are kind and and generous, even helping us to book tickets for a bus journey. Meeting people to hook up with is easy as they provided breakfast on the roof and have a TV room where people weary of walking can hang out in the evening. As it is a small hostel is has a quiet atmosphere. It is conveniently located about five-minutes walk (and I walk slowly) from the Insurgents metro stop which will take you into the centre of the city. We had one of the two double rooms, they are sparsely decorated, but clean and the bed was comfy. I'd really recommend staying here.
Hostal Mansión Havre Hostel in Mexico City … This is an excellent hostel. I had lots of fun and it's close to everything — the museums, Zona Rosa. The staff is just amazing. They treated me like a son. I recommend this place 100 percent. HAVE FUN, don't miss it.
Hostel Moneda in Mexico City … One of the best hostels I stayed in throughout Central America! Not much that can beat free breakfast, free dinner and two free tours for only $10 a night. Location is excellent in the middle of Mexico City with cheap street food at the Zocaló and close to subway and other transportation. Lots of other travelers as well so good opportunities of meeting travel companions.
Hostel Amigo in Mexico City … I was very satisfied with my stay in Hostal Amigo, I felt home there. Not expansive and clean place, good location (close by City Center). the staff was very friendly. nice atmosphere, party downstairs in a hostel bar every few days! I warmly recommend it as a place to stay.
