Puerto Escondido Puerto is one of my favorite spots. It's one of those places that when leaving it, you know you'll end up back there at some point. Gorgeous beaches, great surfing (but that doesn't even need to be mentioned), really great people, and always stuff going on.
Hotel Shalom in Puerto Escondido This hostel was great. There is such an awesome atmosphere about the place, and stuff is always going on. The surf is great, best I've seen, and the beaches are fantastic. The locals are great, really friendly and the workers at the hostel are fantastic. I'm wondering how I could go about getting a job there myself. I can't wait to go back.
HI - Oaxaca - Hostel Paulina in Oaxaca I really liked this hostel. They offer tour packages of the surrounding area. It is centrally located (just blocks from the Zocalo) and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. I met some friendly folks who told my buddy about places to stay in Puerto Escondido. Also, a group of Mexican students (very young) for some reason all wanted to take pictures with me (ha ha ha). My only complaint was that the first night there were some rather young kids staying in our room who were up laughing and talking loudly past 3 a.m. (take it outside, kids)! I would still highly recommend this place. It was much cleaner then the first place we looked at and has a pleasant little atrium area and pond. Also upstairs there is space up on the roof to soak up the sun and see the surrounding area. Check it out!
HI - Oaxaca - Hostel Paulina in Oaxaca My friend and I stayed here in October 2005 and thought it was like a little oasis. We were in a six-bed female dorm, but there were only three of us in there and our roommate was really lovely. The room and bathrooms were always clean and there's this great garden out the back. The water feature in the lobby is really calming and the staff were very helpful and friendly. It's located very close to the zocala, restaurants, and shops. Plus, there's this awesome free breakfast, which is tasty and huge (I remember there being cereal, yogurt, fruit, toast, and cooked food). It's not a party hostel, but that meant we were able to get a decent sleep before our early starts. I would definitely stay here again!
Hotel & Youth Hostal Mayflower in Puerto Escondido I have been to sixty-fivecountries, possibly one hundred-plus hostels!
This hostel is in the top five of all hostels I have visited. One month in '04 and two months in '05. I will try to get there again in late '06.
It's better than any "tropical resort" (including Asia, Australia, Tahiti, Hawaii, Cabo, Baja, Mexico, Central America, Europe, Eastern Europe, USA). The "personality" and "ratings" of the hostel is fantastic. The recreation and water sports are unlimited. It's a town you will want to move to because it's cheap, mellow, low stress, happy go lucky, offers everything of home, with the benefits of North America!
Hotel & Youth Hostal Mayflower in Puerto Escondido I have been to the hostel in February 2006, so about three months ago. I stayed in a double room with a friend. It was very cheap and clean and close to the main, almost at the main road and at the same time quiet. We even had a own bathroom and really large and comfortable beds for 10€ per person and night. They were a whole bunch of people there, everybody was nice and there were a lot of parties going on there. For me the best thing was the free internet.
Hostal Pochon in Oaxaca Excelent Hostel, very good breakfast. the dorms are almost like a private room. just three minutes and we were in the heart of the historic center. they have very profesional Mexican cooking lessons! above all, it was very clean and the staff was great.
Hotel Shalom in Puerto Escondido Ok, so I have been at the hostel for a while and I get that some people don't like it and why. Like all of Mexico it's running on antiquated technology. Really the nearest color printshop is nine hours away. Now the good things, the ownership has changed, the sheets are clean, the staff is friendly and helpful, the beaches are close, there is a pool, and birds and an ocelot in a giant cage. It's walking distance to everything, it's being remodeled, repainted, cleaned up even more and generally getting an overhaul. Also it's a tropical freaking paradise where you can sleep in a hammock under the stars, and if, while doing so, you get bitten by mosquitos, then you probably should be smart enough to be traveling with mosquito spray if you want to sleep outdoors. As for the prices, I only know of one place cheaper in the whole town, and it's way off the main drag and not convenient to anything. Now, I do have to say that Shalom, which means Peace, is not necessarily the best name for
Hotel Shalom in Puerto Escondido Awesome hostel, with a really cool vibe, nice staff and party atmosphere in the bar in the evenings. It's also close to some nice cafes, etc. I love Hotel Shalom!!
Hotel Shalom in Puerto Escondido I think this is the best hostel I've ever been to. It had everything I wanted. My boyfriend and I spent the most romantic and perfect moments here. It's expensive indeed, but it is definitely worth it!
Hotel & Youth Hostal Mayflower in Puerto Escondido We stayed three nights and had an awesome time. Its very clean, spacious with good facilities (kitchen, fridge, rooftop floor). It's perfect to do the "boteillon" before going out -- we did drinking games every night with a group up to fifteen people. Maybe a bit too expensive for Puerto and also the staff (especially the owner) wasn't friendly enough. But in total still the best place you can stay in town!
Hotel Shalom in Puerto Escondido Close access to the beach. The staff were really helpful and the atmosphere was really cool. I spent Christmas there and it was an awesome experience. It has close access to everything a backpacker would need.
Mezkalito Hostel in Oaxaca Great hostel, helpful staff. Cheap rooms (80 pesos for the mixed dorm). Central location. Loses a star because the pool wasn't available when we were there but otherwise great. Stay here.
