San Miguel de Allende is a great colonial town, unique because of its large artist population, and galleries galore. There is a lot to see right in the city center, and amazing hot springs (La Gruta is very neat - with a cave) just outside. There are a lot of restaurants with very good food (and desserts...), and the plaza is always lively.
San Miguel de Allende is amazing. Its colonial architecture and old buildings are just a living painting, full of colors. The market and the church are the best places to visit.
It's easy to get addicted to a place where truly beautiful colonial architecture contrasts with the exhuberance of the of the everpresent University students and the charro musicians who entertain at all times in the beautiful plazas. Founded upon a mining area, Guanajuato sits on a web of tunnels, which nowadays provide unique traffic arteries. Both the young and not-so young will have a delightful time! Do not miss the world-famous Festival Cervantino, held every year in October.
I spent a summer in Guanajuato two years ago. It's a charming town, take the tram up to see Pipila and enjoy the multi-colored houses from high up. See the creepy mummies and markets, and just relax. While it's not as lively as Mexico City, Guanajuato is still a good place to spend a few days.
San Miguel de Allende … I intend to rent an apartment in San Miguel next year and probably spend about eight months there. Hands down, it's one of the best cities I've ever been to. I miss it!
Alcatraz Hostel in San Miguel de Allende … The Hostel Alcatraz is definitely good value for money. The first thing that strikes you is the friendliness and helpfulness of the hosts. The rooms and facilities are nice, clean, and done with love. And it's really cheap for San Miguel de Allende. Many thanks to the Alcatraz Team!
Iron House Hostel in San Miguel de Allende … Great people. Great place. As cosy as your 'home sweet home'. Ricardo is not only the hostel manager he will end up being your friend.
Casa Kloster Hostel Internacional in Guanajuato … Great location, friendly staff, nice place! We were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed our stay. They can accommodate large groups; we were a group of 13. I would definitely go back.
Casa Hostel de Allende in San Miguel de Allende … Amazing house...gorgeous place, the family, the decoration, every detail make this a unique visit to San Miguel Allende. Great yoga, and a peaceful atmosphere.
Estación Esperanza Youth Hostel in Guanajuato … Just the best hostel in the city -- clean, safe, and the most important, the fun is all around.
HI - Guanajuato - Hostalito de Guanajuato Hostel in Guanajuato … I stayed at this hostel for a week in June 2004. It is very clean, stylish, and decently priced. It has a good location. The lady who owns this place, Lupita, is super buena onda (a really cool lady). I love the skeleton chairs in the kitchen! There is a nice view from the kitchen to an old street with a tunnel, and a decent view from all the patios, the four-bed room patio especially. I met some great people here too!
Casa del Tio Hostel in Guanajuato … Nice dorm rooms, festive rooftop terrace, and excellent location in Guanajuato. Unfortunately, the bathrooms were not cleaned the six days I was there, which prompted me to find another hostel for my last days.
Hostel Refugio de Angeles in Guanajuato … The hostel I stayed this week was called "Refugio de Angeles," and it was on Cantarranas -- I'm positive because I took a photo of their sign as I walked out the door. However, the photos on this site do not look like the grimy, dim-lit, place I stayed in, nor do the listed amenities add up. Now, this hostel is actually just the second floor of a huge cafe-restaurant, and from what I saw, there isn't even an operating hostel office area. In all fairness, I got in late and had no reservations, so maybe others' experiences are different, but when I arrived at 8 p.m., a waiter/cook (who was about seventeen) just walked me up to the dorm/shared room and told me to pay when I saw him next. I never heard about a gym/fitness area or a game room. I just wanted a bed, though, so I was ok about that. What did bother me about this hostel were many little things that added up. The bathrooms were gross. The "men's" and "women's" toilets were just four toilet stalls in one bathroom, two that said…
La Casa de Dante in Guanajuato … The family that runs this guesthouse/hostel really enjoy what they are doing and that's something you can feel. They make you feel welcome, introduce you to the other guests, inform you of any activity going on in town, give you a superb breakfast. The hostel is very clean and well equipped (Wi-Fi, nice kitchen, patio for dining, book exchange), you can hand-wash your clothes and hang them at the terrace (with amazing views), the dorm is really big and has two bathrooms so even if it's for ten people it never felt packed, though while I was there there were never more than eight people staying in it. It is not a party hostel and it's located close to the center but up a lot of stairs, what makes for wonderful views but isn't so nice if you are very tired or carrying your backpack (though you can get to the upper street by taxi and then go down the stairs), but still I think it's well worthy, also the price is slightly more expensive than other hostels but I think 15 or 20 pesos more…
