Nishijin Kanouya in Kyoto … Ok, this hostel is difficult to find at the first time. But if you arrive, you can call and the manager will take you from the bus station. What a service. And it is like this all the time. If you have got any question, Sayoko will try to answer. It is really great. The hostel is small and friendly, the rooms are clean, and the living room is warm. And because of the rooms are cold, in each bed is an electric blanket. I love them. The house itself is old and has got a really nice atmosphere. If you want sightseeing in Kyoto you can rent a bike, it is cheap and very good. Every bike is in perfect condition and Kyoto is great for cycling. In one word, this hostel is perfect. When I return to Kyoto I will stay there again, for sure. And, no I do not work there, I am just a german girl who really enjoyed the time in this hostel in Kyoto.
Chita Guest Inn in Kyoto … My wife and I stayed at Chita for four nights and it was fantastic. Returning there at the end of the day felt like going home. Sakai-san is a very friendly woman and if you speak a little bit of Japanese she will be thrilled to chat with you. She even gave us some train tickets to Nara that her family was unable to use one day. We found the futons to be very comfortable, and the modern heater/air conditioner in the room was a relief after many kerosene heaters. My only complaint was the long walk to the toilets (through the common room, no less) from the guest room. Also the single shower means you'll want to schedule your shower time during less-busy times like late night or late morning.
Backpackers Hostel K's House Kyoto in Kyoto … I stayed in this hostel in May 2004 for 3 nights. My friend and I rented a double private room, and it was very clean and functional. The common areas were also very tidy. The location is great and the staff were friendly and helpful. It is one of the best hostels I have stayed at. I will highly recommend this place.
Backpackers Hostel K's House Kyoto in Kyoto … This was a great, cheap place to stay in Kyoto. The facility is in really good shape and seems almost brand new. The common areas -- kitchen, bathrooms, outside patio -- were very clean and homey. We stayed in a private double and used the shared bathrooms. The room was tiny, but we didn't spend that much time there. The bathrooms were fine and had those wonderful Japanese heated toilet seats. Other travellers were respectful and intersting. Can't go wrong by staying here!
Kyoto Utano Youth Hostel in Kyoto … I stayed there in June 2004. the staff were brilliant, they even put on a trip to watch fireflies in the evening. Had a great time there. The hostel is not in the centre of Kyoto but is well worth the bus ride. I hope to stay there again soon.
Backpackers Hostel K's House Kyoto in Kyoto … Had an opportunity to stay for five days at K's House in Kyoto and it was extremely convenient to everything, very clean, comfortable and the staff were helpful whenever approached. The facilities were very clean and never crowded. This was our first accomodation when we arrived in Japan and as such set the mood for the rest of the trip. I never felt cramped for space and the people that were staying at the Hostel were very nice. It is within walking distance (easily) to the train, subways, and most of the major sights. Great restaurants were nearby as well.
J-Hoppers Kyoto Guest House in Kyoto … My boyfriend Ruben and I stayed here from December 12 to December 15. This place made us feel at home after we'd spent a long time traveling. Everybody is so gentle, and you can find everything here that you need on your trip. They really know travelers' needs. Thanks for everything.
Kyoto Utano Youth Hostel in Kyoto … Utano is by far one of the best youth hostels in Japan. I traveled from one end of the country to the other visiting many hostels and I always compared them to Kyoto's Utano Youth Hostel. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is laid back, and the food is great. The breakfest buffet is good and the dinners are made by some old school Kyoto folks who know how to make some really awesome traditional Japanese cuisine. It may be far away from the main station, but it is close to a lot of the bigger temples in the NorthWest, as well as a large forested hill, which is a lovely place to see the Kyoto night skyline. I completely recommend Kyoto.
Chita Guest Inn in Kyoto … The Chita Guest Inn was by far my favorite and most memorable ryokan during my trip. The hotel is clean, warm (which isn't that common for a ryokan in the fall), and offered the biggest room that I had during my entire trip. The traditional decor and comfy settings are great, but what really shines about this place are the interactions between the other guest and the staff. In the common room many international guest collect and share site seeing experiences and general conversation. It was a great place to talk about cultures over some hot tea or a cold beer. The staff is also fantastic. Yumiko-san and Kahori-san are both sweethearts and very personable. It's not the standard "ohayo gozaimasu" and disappear that many foreigners are probably used to. Also Kahori-san's English is strong and she offers a wealth of touristy information. I will stay at this ryokan during my next trip to Kyoto.
Kyoto Utano Youth Hostel in Kyoto … I stayed in this place a few years ago, and it was great! It's out of the way, but it's beautiful! Bamboo forest surrounds this place and you can really commune with nature here. Their shampoo and soap is so great! It comes out in a foam and keeps me more moisturized than anything I can find in the US. I really liked it at this hostel, and I hope to visit it again someday.
Guesthouse Waraku-an in Kyoto … I stayed in Kyoto eight days and i visited a lot of guesthouses and the most beautiful place was Warakuan. the owners are so polite and friendly and the place is very clean and comfortable -- it's like a typical japanese house. I'm sure that when i come back i go there.
J-Hoppers Kyoto Guest House in Kyoto … Aki speaks good English and is a really nice guy who has travelled extensively himself. Surroundings are neat and clean with excellent facilities. Location is good. Thoroughly recommended.
