Dun Laoghaire is great, a small town 20 minutes from the big town with shopping and a 10 minute walk along the sea to a small beach. Library, pubs, nightlife, good fast food and plenty of possibillities for a traditional Irish music session in the area. Don't miss the village Dalkey with nice pubs and the brilliant view from Killiney Hill!
I have not only visited Dublin but I've lived there for a year. And all I can say is: It's a great city! Yes, it is a bit more expensive than other European metropolitan areas, but at the same time you won't find nicer people, more fun and better accommodation anywhere else in the world. The Irish are nice folks; friendly, helpful and easy to talk to. The crime rate isn't higher as in Berlin or in London; just use your common sense and you'll be fine. And the art collections belong to the best preserved exhibitions on the planet. They may not be large, but they are incredibly valuable for any connoisseur. Plan ahead, make sure to have list of places to go, things to do and landmarks to visit and it will be a fantastic trip!
What a lovely stay it was! Though I was born in Paris and live in the Alps, I found Dublin city as one of the most rocking ever. People simply go there on drinking, talking and get laid purposes...
It's a great city, but better not to visit at Christmastime because everything's closed -- even pubs! And Dublin without pubs is not the same. It's a funny city and the Irish are the kindest people I've ever met. Don't miss visit Temple Bar, and if you have time then take a bus to Howth Village and see its cliffs and its lighthouse. It's absolutely fantastic!
I loved Ireland, but especially Dublin!
Globetrotters Dublin Hostel in Dublin … Excellent! This hostel is not only clean, but even luxurious, and the beds are very comfortable. It is also safe and very centrally located, close to both the train (Connolly) and bus station. Unless you share a room with someone who snores, there are no noise issues. The only down part is that it costs a little bit more, but the reason for that is the breakfast -- not your typical hostel breakfast, but a full Irish one, with hot food and homemade baked goods. It is enough food that you won't need to eat lunch. Finally, check out the restaurant across the street (O'Shea's) for traditional Irish food. Any place that can make baked chicken, mashed potatoes, and stuffing into a culinary experience must be doing something right!
Barnacles Temple Bar House Hostel in Dublin … I stayed here the first week in March. I had an absolutely wonderful time. The evening staff is by far the most helpful, although I am not knocking the morning staff; they were great, too. I stayed in a 12-bed dorm and met quite a few people. The room was clean, the bathroom clean. You cannot beat the location right in the center of Temple Bar. Cross the Liffey and you can get any tour bus you little heart desires!! It was my first time in Ireland, actually the first time outside of the U.S., and I absolutely loved it!! I would definitely go there again.
Litton Lane Hostel in Dublin … We stayed two nights in this hostel, and it was fabulous!! I only wish we'd had time to stay longer. It was the best hostel breakfast we had the entire trip, the staff was super-friendly and helpful, the place was clean and the guests were nice, and I cannot speak well enough of the bathrooms. EXCELLENT hostel!
Chelsea Accommodation Hostel in Dublin … This place is tip top! I traveled with eleven other students for one mental weekend over St. Paddy's day in Dublin. We arrived to welcoming reception, we were showed to our rooms by the friendly hotel staff, Mr. and Mrs. Poland. We had a newly furnished room with clean beds and bedding and privacy from the rest of the hostel. If you are traveling and looking for a basic hostel -- a bed to stay for the night with shower and toilet facilities (yes they smell a bit but they are not bug ridden like other people have said) -- then chelsea is the place for you. We went to dublin with one thing on our mind, to drink all weekend and then have somewhere to stay, if you are a young backpacker or someone wanting basic accommodation, then chelsea is the perfect accommodation for you.
Globetrotters Dublin Hostel in Dublin … This hostel was amazing, with comfortable beds, although a bit cramped. Very clean and very safe/security conscious. There was no lockout, which was nice, and breakfast was awesome, whatever you can think of, and as much as you want! I'd definitely stay here again. Staff friendly were enough, and there's free Internet. The kitchen was very, very small.
Paddy's Palace Dublin in Dublin … It's just been painted and very very clean. Small enough to get to know people and the staff are great. One of the best hostels we've stayed in on a year long trip. Great location and secure too!
Paddy's Palace Dublin in Dublin … Stayed at Paddy's over the New Year of 2001/2002 and had an absolute blast. Friendly staff, nice clean rooms and bathrooms and a very friendly atmosphere between all staff and guests.
Isaac's Hostel Dublin in Dublin … I really enjoyed my stay at Isaac's hostel. It was the cheapest hostel in Dublin, and great for meeting other people. The bathrooms were not that bad, and I thought the security was pretty good. For ten euros a night it's a bargain.
Avalon House in Dublin … I visted this hostel over christmas and thought it was great, if we ever get back to Ireland again I would stay here
Citi Hostel in Dublin … Seriously, where else will you find a super clean and cheap place to stay with a TV in each room? This hostel has a really nice staff, well-equipped kitchen and dining room, and it's in a great location. I highly recommend this hostel!
Citi Hostel in Dublin … i lived here for nine months and i was woken up at all hours of the morning in an eighteen-bed hostel for that period. to be honest i did enjoy and i do miss it.
Avalon House in Dublin … This hostel was excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms and bathrooms were clean, and the breakfast was great. (They had fruit! Two kinds!) Though it is a very big hostel, and somewhat institutional, it's also very secure feeling, and it was great to be able to lock my stuff in a locker and not worry about it while I was out. In all, this place was fantastic. I would definitely stay here again.
