We've been in Erfurt for three days, very nice town to visit.
Weimar is a cool little town, worth a stop. Good food, nice people and quiet. A good place to get some rest after a fun time in Berlin but still have a good time. Real low-key. Plus, if you're interested I recommend visiting Buchenwald, the former concentration camp which is just five minutes away.
I love Bad Blankenburg- in fact I love Thuringia! The little town in the middle of wild nature is so lovely that u must see it with ur own eyes to understand how beautiful it really is... I lived there for over 7 years so I know what I'm talking about, now I do live in Scotland but Bad Blankenburg is a lot more attractive than this village here will ever be...
Nordhausen … A nice, sweet city! It's so close to "Harz" but I strongly recommend you to stay in the boutique hotels at Harzdorf.
Hababusch Hostel in Weimar … The Hababusch is really one-of-a-kind. It's nice to have a place that just feels like you're going back to your own apartment at night: there's no curfew and you can go about your own daily plans. The people that work there are truly exceptional, they are very kind and willing to help when you are in a pinch (I should know — I had to turn a four-day stay into a three-week stay when my rent contract for my apartment was late!). The hostel is cheap enough that I recommend getting a small room (if you book ahead of time) so you have plenty of space to put bags.
Hababusch Hostel in Weimar … This hostel certainly belongs in the quirky category -- and it's a matter of taste if one likes such places. I do -- and this is one of the best hostels of this type I've been to. Right in the centre -- and that's important if you want to immerse yourself in the Weimar ambient -- and very cheap. The rooms and the kitchen are basic, the showers even more so, but what Hababusch is about is the arty atmosphere and the living room with piano, large dining table, and this amazing chandelier where everybody meets in the evenings. One thing -- the individual rooms indeed don't have any locks, which might be slightly concerning if you're traveling with something valuable. I've never heard of anything being stolen in Hababusch, though.
HI - Eisenach Hostel in Eisenach … I found this youth hostel very pleasant. It wasn't so much the decor (although it was very nice and it seemed like a pretty old house) as it was the staff. There was one young man there whom I know only as "Thomas" (I don't know if that's how it is spelled). He was the fittest thing I'd ever seen but I was too shy to talk to him and he seemed busy. I took one photograph of him, but I forgot to put the flash on and it did not turn out.
Hababusch Hostel in Weimar … This hostel is a very old house in the historic center of this charming small city. The house has obviously not been modernized to the latest standards but that only enhances the atmosphere of the place! It has a very cozy and warm atmosphere, and the hostel is run by the students who live upstairs in the same house. The guests are part of the family. Weimar is impressive. It's a city that, as a whole, seems to preserve its history. There is not much that will disturb you in strolling back in time through parks, past castles and other cultural and historic places. Friedrich Nietzsche, J. S. Bach and Martin Luther lived in this city, as well as dozens of other "celebrities" in the field of music, philosophy, architecture, literature and art. The Buchenwald concentration camp is point of interest nearby.
Hababusch Hostel in Weimar … The Hababusch Hostel is great. It's a little kitschy, but it's got lots of character and the help there is great. Get to know Kai, he's a wealth of information. He taught us the ins and outs of Weimar. I've been here for almost three weeks and its gonna be sad leaving. Weimar is a beautiful city with tons of culture. Just watch out for "no money Sundays."
Hababusch Hostel in Weimar … Mellow atmosphere, centrally located, quiet (with the exception of the garbarge trucks in the morning, which since I don't have an alarm clock and I prefer to walk around in the morning), and internet (cheaper than in town). Beautiful ivy facade, kitchen, no curfew, and comfortable beds. This hostel ranks near the top for me.
Hababusch Hostel in Weimar … The hostel is cleaned daily. The building is old and it shows. But there is no problem with that. That's were the atmosphere comes in. I am told that this hostel is run by students as a non-profit organisation. So it can not be compared with a commercial hostel. There is no reception. The students that live upstairs do the check-in. There is a touch of communal living and anyone who enjoys that will feel very much at home in this place.
HI - Weimar - Germania Hostel in Weimar … Nice hostel. It was quite clean and pillowcases were even included in the bedsheets! We had a three-bed room for just the two of us, but the rooms was rather small so we ended up putting our suitcase on the unused bed. Our room had a table and sink, which was nice and cosy. Our room had windows covering two nearly all of two of walls. The hostel was literally a one-minute walk from the train station and a bus stop that took us directly to the concentration camp located outside Weimar. There was a cheap donair place next door and an Italian restaurant on the other side of the building. We were only in Weimar for one night so we did not see everything but we did walk around at night. Weimar is a beautiful town with a lovely city center close to the hostel. It was still pretty lively at 1 a.m. with people eating ice cream and wandering around the zone closed off to cars. If you are wandering around late at night, you might want to drop into a 'store' that displays old abandoned…
HI - Windischleuba Hostel - JH Schloss Windischleuba Hostel in Windischleuba … In May of 1992 I stayed at this hostel. It was wonderful! I was touring with my college choir and happened to be staying at this Hostel with a children's choir. The castle is beautiful and clean. Some of the rooms even had beautiful murrals painted on the walls. The woods behind the castle are a wonderful place for a walk. There are a few rooms that aren't dormitory style so it would be a great place for couples! VERY ROMANTIC! The courtyard is a great place to socialize or sit and write. The morning we left we had a improptu concert with the children's choir in the courtyard. WONDERFUL ACOUSTICS! Staying here was one of the highlights of six trips to Europe!
Hababusch Hostel in Weimar … The best hostel I have seen in a long time, if you are not too picky. It's right in the historic centre, very cheap, and obviously run by students, i.e. not professionals. Weimar is the most wonderful place to relax if you enjoy old buildings, parks and scenery. It can also be recommended for its cafes, young art galleries and student life.
HI - Erfurt - JH Klingenstrasse Hostel in Erfurt … I stayed one night with a large church group of 5 families. Family rooms were available in 3 and 4 bed configurations with private bath. Rooms were actually about 4 blocks from check-in desk, in what appears to be an old hotel obtained by the hostel. It's very easy to find on the southwest corner of the ring road. Use Erfurt West exit from the autobahn. Parking was a challenge. It's about a 2.5-mile walk from the central city sights. The staff spoke good English, several had attended school in UK or US. I will stay there again.
HI - Erfurt - JH Klingenstrasse Hostel in Erfurt … Travelling to this hostel is pretty easy as there is a tram that stops just down the road from the hostel(number 5 from the Haupbahnhof to Steigerstrasse) and the signs point the way from there. The hostel itself is in a fairly quiet residential area and seems more of a family hostel. Good if you are looking for a quiet nights sleep but not if you came to party! There is internet access which you have to pay for but only one computer so sometimes there may be a queue. Also the common room is fairly large with chairs, a tv and pool table. The rooms were clean with an en-suite bathroom, if not a little plain. There are also lockers in the room. Breakfast is included in the price and is served pretty early in the morning (i think till 9). The usual stuff, with cereal, bread rolls etc. Overall, no complaints other than it being a bit quiet but facility wise, everything is there.
