HI - Magdeburg - Kulturerlebnistreff Hostel in Magdeburg … Clean, quiet hostel in city center. Rooms cleaned daily. Staff is friendly and gives good directions and recommendations. Clean shower/bath. Windows offer a good view of the city. one-minute walk to nearest tram stop, two-minute walk to the Hauptbanhof or Allee Center shopping mall, less than five minutes to amazing restaurants like Palazzo or Ciao Ciao, less than ten minutes' walk to popular Hasselbachplatz.
HI - Schierke Hostel in Schierke … We spend there a couple of days in February for skiing. Right next to the hostel was access to a network of good quality tracks. We were surprised that there are such good cross-country conditions. Also the whether couldn't have been better! The hostel doesn't seem to take a lot of advantage of this situation. They had a room where you could lock your skis, but no place for waxing - they didn't even have a thermometer. The management was very friendly and helpful, even if some of the staff reminded us on the history of the building. The way they advertise this place indicates that they focus more on low budget conferences and disco fun for teens. The consequence was that we felt a little lonely in this building. There where more staff than guests and this makes us fear that they have to close down this beautiful place soon.
HI - Quedlinburg Hostel in Quedlinburg … I stayed here in the spring of 2006. It was very quiet with only a few small school groups staying at that time. Nevertheless it was everything you need for a short stay -- clean large rooms, good facilities, helpful staff, and a great breakfast. Reasonably priced too. Although some may find it a little difficult to find (there's a small office in the side street if the courtyard is closed), it is central to all the main attractions, and all are accessible by foot. I'm generally wary when it comes to HI Hostels, but, this was a winner. And Quedlinburg (even if you have never heard of it or contemplated visiting) is really beautiful and worth the effort.

HI - Wittenberg-Lutherstadt Hostel in Lutherstadt-Wittenberg … Stayed two nights with a large church group — 12 youth and 10 adults. Males were in one room, females in another. Friendly staff, with moderate English-speaking ability. It stayed open late to receive us with prior arrangement. Very clean rooms and bath facilities. Bed linen is available for about 3 euros extra. EXTREMELY convenient location to city center and historical sites. It's a little hard to find in the middle of the night. It's best if you pull up in right front of the Schlosskirche and walk into courtyard, then take the stairs to your right. Then figure out how to get your cars around to the parking lot. We plan to stay there again if we take another group.
Jugendherberge Affalter Hostel in Affalter … In 2001 I cycled from Holland to Turkey. I think this hostel was absolutely great ! I have never felt so abandoned there in my upstairs room, but man o man, the hospitality was superb ! One floor, three rooms for me alone. It felt like home far away from home. The lines of Led Zeppelins "Stairway to heaven" "You can check out every time you like, but you can never leave" will always cross my mind. Good food, nice germans, absolute silence. Come to yourself, rethink your sins, get rest ! And enjoy the breakfast and the bordercrossing to Chomutov (Komutau) next day.
