Dresden is marvelous. You can find cheap lodgings easily and the buses and trains can take you to some fabulous sites in and around the city.
Dresden is a nice city full of contrasts! In the ancient part of Dresden (Altstadt) there are several buildings built in the 18th or 19th century (zwinger, semperoper, frauenkirche...). In Dresden Neustadt you have the choice between different kinds of alternive shops (gothic, Indian, African, renaissance clothes...). Dresden is worth visiting!
I loved Bautzen! It's amazing! Planning my next trip there for December!
Geyer You must come here around Christmas! The Erzgebirge region is known as the Christmas land in Germany. You will definitely enjoy this glittering, silence, peaceful old fashioned fairy tale christmas!
Hostel Sleepy Lion in Leipzig I absolutely enjoyed the stay in this cozy hostel. It is clean and I felt so at home — a wonderful sleep, nice and friendly people and a comfortable common area together with the homey feel of the wooden staircase. I liked it very much!
Hostel Mondpalast in Dresden The hostel is easily find and is about ten minutes' walk from the Dresden-Neustadt station. The floors is well-decorated and so is the room. There are lots of cooking utensils in the kitchen and you can cook by yourself. The room is kept in very good condition and the heater works very well! The toilets are clean also. The hostel also offer high-quality food and drinks with a reasonable price. That is very good to stay in such an excellent hostel with this reasonable price! I love Dresden and enjoyed so much my stay in Mondpalast! Thank you for the nice staffs again!
Hostel Mondpalast in Dresden I liked it from an instant, it is friendly and the rooms are nicely decorated. The bar and kitchen are great and communication is a main thing here.
Lollis Homestay in Dresden what to say more -- great location and a feeling like home. thanks for the stay, I will be back.
Hostel Mondpalast in Dresden Our first impressions of Hostel Mondpalast weren't great. The supposed "24-hour reception" didn't really come through for us when our bus was late getting into town. We didn't get to the hostel till 5 a.m., and we had to sleep in the doorway on the street for 2.5 hours before the cleaning lady grumpily allowed us to wait inside for check-in at 8 a.m. After this excitement, however, the rest of our stay was excellent. The reception staff were helpful, and the rooms and bathrooms were very clean. We made heaps of friends, encouraged by the spacious dining room/lounge area, and a busload of Italians who cooked us pasta and went out dancing with us. The location was great, within easy walking distance to good bars, clubs, etc. They had the best souvlakis down the road, too. I would definitely recommend this hostel. (Oh, and you have to hire bikes in Dresden - six euros for the day from the train station Neustadt. It's the best way to see the city!)
Hostel Mondpalast in Dresden Great hostel, plus it has a very excellent location at the edge of the hippest street in town, Louisienstrasse. There are ots of cool bars and restaurants nearby. Don't go anywhere else! It's super clean and super friendly, too.
Hostel Sleepy Lion in Leipzig Beautiful showers, clean rooms, helpful staff, a great location in a cool old building, good stuff!
Hostel Louise 20 in Dresden This is a great new hostel. It is across the river, about 10 minutes from the old part of the city, but it is located in a great neighborhood full of bars, coffee shops, and markets. It is clean, beautifully decorated, the service is friendly, the rooms aren't over-booked, and there's no pressure to be social--but there is the opportunity for socializing if there are lots of other travelers. The kitchen is a wonder of God, and the breakfast, if you're a meat and cheese eater, is totally worth the money you pay for it. Towels are free. Bring a sleeping bag, though the duvets and pillows are huge and comfy. It's more like a city bungalow than a youth hostel.
Hostel Mondpalast in Dresden Great place to stay. Clean, good beds and prices were good, too. The walk to the center is not too bad. Staff are friendly and helpful. It's one of the best hostels I've stayed at.
Hostel Sleepy Lion in Leipzig The staff is so friendly, and the breakfasts are pretty good!
Lollis Homestay in Dresden Nicely decorated, helpful staff, and it's got a great location in the Dresden Neustadt (new city) where the nightlife is.
After the German reunification, the communists moved out of the Dresden Neustadt part of town, leaving behind many vacant buildings open to punk and hippie squatters. It's a very unique area, known as the Bunte Republik Neustadt.
Guesthouse Mezcalero in Dresden I stayed there for two nights April, 2002. The place is beautifully decorated and very clean, warm, and friendly. I had a double with my friend and we got a lofted bed! (Unlike bunkbeds in other hostels, these are solid wooden lofts secured to the walls.) Out of all of the hostels we stayed in for the month of April, this was the one with the most unique character. We didn't get to check out any other rooms, but the ones they show in the pictures don't look anything like ours, so it seems their rooms are indeed "individually styled."
