Kochel was a very sweet town and my family and I absolutely loved it there. Everyone was very nice and understanding of our English/German translations... :-)
Füssen is an amazing place with unmatched beauty. Everyone knows about Schloss Neuschwanstein, which is overly touristy but still a must-see, but I found there was a lot more to see than just that. Schloss Hohenschwangau is actually much more interesting on the inside (it was actually lived in and is chalk full of artifacts) and much less crowded, so don't skip it.
There was one particular restaurant here that really stands out in my mind, and I highly recommend. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name. The best I can do is to say that it was just to the left of a drug store, on the south side of a street, east of the traffic circle on either Kemptener Strasse or Ritterstrasse (I think). It's worth hunting for. It has a traditional appearance on the outside, with true Bavarian atmosphere with traditional food, the kind of place where you can order a whole leg of pork with dumplings and a tall glass of wheat beer. And the waitress there spoke five languages, including English.
I've been to Bayerisch Eisenstein 5 times since 1995. I spent time there waiting for the train to Klatovy. Everybody was very friendly and the town is really nice. I will be back in August. Greetings from Australia.
Nuremberg is surprisingly beautiful, I will definitely go back.
Schliersee is absolutely beautiful! The people are about the friendliest I've ever met -- some locals we met actually took us to Oktoberfest (45 minutes by train) and we had a most outstanding time! However, the Schliersee area is a vacation area for Germans, so don't expect to find too many people who speak English, but most people there will do anything to help you, especially if you make an effort to speak German, and SMILE!
Regensburg is a wonderful medieval town, one of the only places not to be hit at all during WWII. The old town is especially charming, hosting a sausage kitchen that claims to be nearly one thousand years old, right along the river. Well worth a visit!
Benediktbeuern Benediktbeurn is a great place, especially for families! There's great biking, wonderful hiking, and is also the perfect place for all you sketchers to grab your pencil and head for this beautiful place!Benediktbeurn is a fantastic, rustic place.
Bayreuth My idea of the perfect city. I love it! If I could, I would retire there. Simply idyllic.
Straubing A wonderful and real Bavarian small city. Great churches, schools and hotels. Good transport services and modern industrial area. They also have a zoo (tiergarten) in a most beautiful woodland setting. Visit anytime, but best avoid the annual Fest in August, when the crowds are too much and the local country people need the place to themselves. One of the best small cities of Bavaria.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen I lived there in 1992. It was the most beautiful place in the world. A must see if you are in Europe.
Bayrischzell A beautiful alpine paradise I have been to twice and will return again this fall. Friendly local people and deluxe dining and accomodations made our trips there wonderful experiences we always want to repeat
Munich If you're rushed here, try Mike's bike tour as a way to have fun and see a lot of the sights in town. Otherwise, definitely go to the English Garden (you can swim or surf in the river). Skip the glockenspiel and nude meadow (but if you don't, say high to Tripod). The beergardens are fun but overpriced, try a local beergarden for much cheaper prices and a more relaxed time.
Würzburg I've lived there and it is a very beautiful city. The parks are just beautiful. You must go there. If you don't you're missing something trust me.
Pottenstein The most beautiful place I have ever visited -- the people are wonderful --friendly and welcoming -- so many wonderful walks.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber This town survives on tourism. It was once a central trading place, but went bankrupt and so no new building has been built in the old town since the 1700's. Really interesting, but don't expect to get a sense of typical German life here. Check out the night watchman's tour (excellent) and the occasional free vocal concerts in various churches. Also, free internet at the tourist office.
