Cassis is wonderful, but in the summer very touristy. But when you walk a little bit, you will find beautiful beaches with many people.
It's a magical place so full of beautiful old colourful buildings and quaint streets. The beach sucked but being from Australia we tend to be spoiled. We loved the sights sounds and smells of Nice and the people were lovely. Our biggest regret was we couldn't spend more time there.
Nice is a lovely city! A walk on the promenade by the beach at night is a must, as all sorts of street entertainers populate this place at night! Day trips I would recommend are to Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, and St. Tropez.
Marseilles is a beautiful city with a very different character than most of France. Good luck and have fun.
Nice is a very frantic city, but beautiful. The beaches aren't the best, I would suggest going to Monaco for Villefranche for that (both are easy to get to, the bus goes straight from one end of the Cote d'Azur to the other, so you can't really miss it). Old Nice is very reminscent of Venice, you MUST find the ice cream/gelato place, it's easy to recognize once you find your way through the maze of Old Nice. Ask to try the olive, it's an experience.
Nice... I love it. It's crowded and full of Americans (no offence) but if you speak French and meet locals it adds to the experience so much. The weather is beautiful, the rocky beach can be surprisingly comfortable if you work at it, and the sunset is absolutely beautiful. Also I had the best pizza and gelato there...who knew? Oh and GO TO THE PUBLIC BEACH IN CANNES! You will not regret it plus the train ride is very scenic.
We stumbled into Cassis by advice of fellow travelers and I am still thinking of the beautiful, quaint town years later. I would love to be able to go back in the future. You must go.
Nice is beautiful. Although rocky, the beach is spectacular. You MUST go to the Ice Cream place in the center of Vielle Nice, it has like 100 flavours (try one scoop of rhubarb, and one scoop of strawberry). Do not even bother trying to get ice cream from anywhere else because it would never be able to match this place. Try having Moulles et Frites (mussels and fries) from Lou Pilha Leva at 13 rue du Collet in Vielle Nice!
Marseille is not the picturesque, idyllic city in France that you have in your mind, but it has a totally different character and vibe to it, which attracted me immensely. It's brilliant.
Nice is cool, the beach is crap, but the city awesome. Watch out for crackheads stealing your bags at night. Spend a day here and then hit St. Tropez and look for P Diddy.
Nice is nice for people who are more interested in going to the (rocky) beach and bars than cultural things. If you are in a hurry, don´t get stuck here as you can see the whole city in one day. One day in Monaco and Cannes is a must. Certain areas are dangerous at night. Another hostel guest got robbed at night during my stay. So don't go out at night by yourself! The city is very expensive and during the summer 2006 the whole main street was under construction, so it wasn´t that pretty. Don´t miss the old town.
Nice is fabulous! You must go here if you are in France. It is the most beautiful place to visit and be sure to do a trip to Monaco.
