I was in Cherbourg a few years years ago, when the U.S.A. had just started bombing Iraq. I was cursed, sworn at, shouted at in French, sworn at behind my back in English, cheated by the Ferry -- 100 Euro to make a two-hour crossing to Pourtsmouth. I was going to spend some days there hiking, and enjoying France, but the one night in a hostel was enough. I left the next day for Portsmouth and when I landed, I got down on my knees, and I kissed the soil of England. Never was I ever happier to be off the continent. Cherbourg does have an excellent baguette shop however -- best baguettes I ever tasted. Cherbourg is a good city to pass on your way to anywhere else.
Family Home Hostel in Bayeux My experience of this hostel was a great one! My friends and I went here in 2005 and it was immaculate. Aside from long games of giant chess and a healthy serving of baguettes all day, the atmosphere was amazing and there were so many fantastic people there. Madam Le Fevre confused us a little, and there was of course, the infamous night of "the distribution of the keys" when we all thought we were going to have to leave our rooms because of a bus load of teenage swedish girls. But thankfully we didnt have to move and the girls still arrived. I had a fantastic time in Bayeux, we rented bikes in the town centre and cylced to the Normandy sites as well as through the countryside for some fresh air. There is an indoor swimming poll in Bayeux, but you cant go in unless you have trunks and a head cap on. Good luck, but I loved this hostel!
Family Home Hostel in Bayeux The large chessboard in the courtyard was awesome! The food was plentiful and fabulous. This was our favorite hostel in all of France, and Bayeux was my favorite town, as well.
Family Home Hostel in Bayeux Apart from the owner who is a bit strange and doesn't always confirm reservations, the place was awesome. I spent one month in Europe staying at hostels, and this place was by far the best. The room we stayed in (one queen sized-bed) was filled with antique furniture...absolutely gorgeous! Everything was picture-perfect and clean. The breakfast is awesome! Most hostels serve plain bread with jam, or cereal and coffee. This place is very family-oriented. They served us fresh-baked bread, cheese, spreads, cereal, coffee, tea, yogurt, and it was all included in the price (which is quite a deal!) I totally recommend this hostel!
Robert Rême Hostel in Caen I stayed for only one night, because they were full. No miracle, it's a fantastic hostel. Easy to find with the help of the maps in front of the train station. The price is (no joke) eleven € (!) per night, excluding sheets (two €) and breakfast (two-fifty €). It offers four-bed rooms, with shower and toilet in different rooms within the four-bed room. A kitchen with heating plates and cleaning facility for the dishes. Lockable cupboards are in the rooms, too. Best price for maximum offer I got on my trip through France! But reserve! There are not many beds there, but it's worth it!
Family Home Hostel in Bayeux If you're on a budget the Family Home Hostel is great value. Don't expect the HIlton, but at such affordable rates it's great. I stayed there in 2006 and will be staying there again this July. Right smack in the middle of town and just down the road from Bayuex's Medieval fare. Also has a great mix of young and old guests which also makes for a bit of fun and a few drinks at night. Breakfast is always fantastic.
Family Home Hostel in Bayeux i recently visited Family home on a school trip back in march. i had the opportunity to be fed some traditional meals while i was there and they were amazing. i found the rooms fairly nice, with a good view ( at least from my room #15 ). the location was wonderful, located within walking distance of the downtown shops, the cathedral, and a shopping center. i found the people pretty nice, although you do need an understanding of french to understand most of what they say.
Family Home Hostel in Bayeux The hostel was awesome. It felt nothing like most HI hostels; it had much more of a Bed & Breakfast kind of feel. English isn't their strong point, so knowing French helps, but it's also kind of fun to stumble your way through a place. It had one of the most interesting mixes of people I'd seen: American teenagers, Canadian backpackers, and middle-aged guys following the Tour de France. Great rooms, too.
Family Home Hostel in Bayeux I have worked at this hostel. I think the food is good (generous portions) and the building is great -- spiral staircases, exposed beams, period features. It does indeed have a "Family Home" feel to it, which I found endearing. Location convenient for centre of Bayeux and for tours of D-Day beaches. It's true the patronne doesn't speak a lot of English but she does a little. There is bike storage space if you need it. Overall -- characterful and authentically French! Not expensive either!
HI - Cherbourg/Octeville Hostel in Cherbourg This is a friendly and helpful hostel. It is very neat and clean, in fact, we are going back there again this year. The only thing is, there was never enough bread left for us in the mornings.
Family Home Hostel in Bayeux Visited this hotel in 2003. It is a real family hotel -- for kids and groups it is ideal. Breakfast is served in a beautiful room and is very good!!! The hotel itself is partly in a 15th century building which enhances its character.
Family Home Hostel in Bayeux I was there in June for three nights. It's in an excellent location: near the amazing cathedral, as well as the main shopping/eating/drinking drag in the town. It has rooms with character, though not enough bathrooms for the size of the hostel. Rudimentary French is highly recommended at this hostel. The language barrier may lead to confusion if you are forced to change rooms (as I was). A great place nonetheless.
Family Home Hostel in Bayeux I stayed in this hostel in 2000. I did somewhat have to wait a bit cause I was there at dinner time and no one made an effort to help me out. But, after a long wait while they ate, I was taken care of and shuttled to another one of their hostels a couple miles away. It was in middle of nowhere but a rather new building and very comfortable. The beds were comfortable and cozy and there were only like five of us in the whole place. I would stay here again if ever I visit Normandy beaches again. They did help me out to get reservations for the D-Day beaches and it was an exceptional value as we saw a lot of that area. I do speak french pretty good and did not have any problems.
