Tallinn is a great city. I found the mixture of Russian and Estonian culture very interesting. The city is a bargain for Westerners. The Estonians and Russians were very helpful and friendly. It is a safe city. Westerners don't need a visa to travel there!
Tallinn Backpackers Hostel in Tallinn This hostel is just amazing -- the staff are friendly and get the parties going, the price is good at just under £10, as is the location near the ferry terminal, yet within the beautiful car-free zone of "Old Town" Tallinn.
Oldhouse Hostel in Tallinn I stayed in this hostel during Easter 2005. It has an absolutely friendly staff, it's newly refurbished, very nicely decorated and right in the old town. Great value for the money!! Highly recommended!
HI - Tallinn - Tallinn Backpackers Hostel in Tallinn An awesome hostel, brilliant location in the old town, a really really friendly place! the staff are all young mostly backpacking themselves so really go out of their way to help you and have fun, the kitchen is very well equipt, the lounge/communal area is comfortable and extremely sociable so you'll meet loads of people, and the bathrooms -- ok so there's only two but they're really clean and one is absolutely enormous, total luxury with an awesome shower. Would definitely recommend this hostel!
Old Town Alur Hostel in Tallinn Super hostel with a perfect location! You can walk to the city center! It is also a cheap hostel, but it is nice and friendly.
HI - Tallinn - Academic Hostel in Tallinn Well run hostel with really good facilities - newly done rooms, very clean, pleasant 24h reception, Internet connection available in each room, very secure. It is a bit outside the center but bus connections are convenient to both old town and the bus station - worth the extra bit of effort!
Old Town Backpackers in Tallinn This is a small hostel with ten beds only but it is very nice. It feels like a home almost and the guy who worked there was very friendly. It has a great location in the center of Tallinn. I really enjoyed my stay here and can certainly recommend it.
City Bike Nunne Hostel in Tallinn This small hostel on the fourth floor of an old house is an excellent place to stay in Old Town Tallinn. Close to many bars and restaurants. Offers several interesting tours; inexpensive; friendly, helpful staff; and is a quiet place to stay in the winter. The only drawback was the extremely almost-vertical stairs! I was there for a week in November 2008. Would recommend to friends.
HI - Tallinn - Merevaik Hostel in Tallinn Hmmm... This hostel was the cheapest I could find, but for a reason. A fair distance out of town meant there was no popping back for that forgotten camera. There was no kitchen, and I slept on an uncomfortable and narrow sofa-bed. If sleep and hot water is all you're after, this place is for you. It was quiet, too. Next door supermarket was also very handy.
Vana Tom Hostel in Tallinn Okay, the place has a great location so that's a big plus. The free breakfast is perhaps the worst thing I have ever eaten (and I've eaten it all). I think it's a bit expensive, and the rooms have way too many bunks. I advise you to stay out all night partying, because sleep is impossible in the hostel. The street below just echoes with loud drunks parading around until the wee hours of the morning. Honestly, you should rent a room from a local in the old town. You can have your own room in a local's house for the same price as this hostel. Enjoy!
Al-Express in Tallinn This hostel is above Tallinn's LOUDEST gay club, pounding out unbearably loud house music til 4am. Fortunately I could sleep through civil war so I was fine, but the rest of my party spent a very sleepless night here! The heating in our room was also really really hot, and the shower kinda cold/weak/dirty. Location is superb: in the middle of Old Town, and the staff were kind, but if it's restful sleep you're after, I suggest you look elsewhere...
Mahtra Hostel in Tallinn Jeez, that was awful! We came there, the staff were unfriendly, and the room — you must have seen it, it's something like a basement. The beds smell like old clothes AND the most frightening thing were the mice running around room. The showers are terrible. :( Never ever again.
The Hostel With No Name in Tallinn This place is very poor, dirty, unsecure, and little more than a squatters house run by drifters. We were convinced to stay in the hostel by two travelers that we met along the way who had made reservations prior to their arrival in Tallin. A phone call was made and beds were confirmed for our group. When we arrived the only member of staff there had forgotten about four men that had checked into the place before he went out and had overbooked by four people. Due to the hour we had nowhere else to go and resorted to the following, two of our group doubled up in one bed, two male members of the group had to sleep on the sofas, and one guy had to sleep on the floor in the communal room. Regardless of this we were all charged full price and could not check out until 1 p.m. when the (incompetent) only staff member returned from his day out. Additionally there is only one shower for the entire hostel with no hot water and two toilets. the wiring would never meet health standard with
