I went to Skagen two summers ago travelling with the Blue Lake Fine Arts Band (a camp located in MI, US) and it was so wonderful! I loved the view off the coast at the northern-most tip. All in all, I had a wonderful time and spending a summer there sounds like a great idea.
My daughter took my husband and me to Skagen in 2000 for a 2 day visit. It wasn't nearly enough time. She was an exchange student from Canada that year. Skagen was the first place she took us to. The artist colony from the turn of the last century was an amazing group of artists. My daughter is also planning on going back to Denmark one day.
HI - Aalborg Hostel - Danhostel Ålborg in Ålborg … Clean, quiet, but very far from town (it's about a 30 minute walk). If you're looking for a street of bars and only bars, this is the town for you.
HI - Frederikshavn Hostel in Frederikshavn … It was cheap, by Scandinavian standards. It's reasonably clean, has communal showers, and cheap prices (linen not included). It has an expensive breakfast, but it's a cheap stay in a big room.
HI - Aalborg Hostel - Danhostel Ålborg in Ålborg … I went there in May last year, and it was the worst hostel in Denmark I have been to. The room was ok, but the kitchen was a disaster, it was all greasy as not cleaned, and there was no plates, cups (i.e. all what is provided usually in a hostel). And without a car it can be quite far from the city center. If you don't plan to use the kitchen it can be great, otherwise...
