Shanghai is a very beautiful city -- I just love it. Take a river boat and go to Shanghai Tower.
Shanghai is like any big city and it feels too Western. The old city and Yuyuan Gardens is touristy but beautiful and the area across the water from the Bund is beautiful. There is not much to do here, so after three days I was ready to move on.
Astor House (Pujiang Hotel) in Shanghai … Amazing! After flying direct from Australia it was total luxury to arrive at this place. Classic old-world charm, very clean, well-organised, bellhops, friendly staff, and awesome building. Stay where Einstein, Chaplin, and Bertrand Russell slept! I stayed Dec '05 and Jan '06, two different rooms, both immaculate. Huge rooms, views, TV with many channels, large ornate bathrooms, total hotel opulence. And free slippers, replaced daily. Good location. staff will organise a taxi for you and make sure you don't pay more than you should -- about one hundred forty yuan to airport I think. Strange bar just around the corner that only played Elton John. Not the cheapest place in town but worth it. Short walk across bridge to the Bund. Safe and secure -- armed guards outside the Russian Embassy across the road. When arriving in Shanghai, take the four hundred thirty-five kilometer per hour MagLev train from airport to last stop. What a blast! Then take a taxi -- pay no more than seventy yuan!…
HI - Shanghai Easytour - Mingtown Etour Hostel in Shanghai … Anyway, it's a great hostel, very clean, nice common area, movie every night, like a resort for backpackers! Also, amazing location.
Koala International Youth Hostel in Shanghai … What a wonderful experience it was staying here! From the internet access to the steamed buns for breakfast outside your window it was a surpurb choice! Particularly though it was the efficient friendly and incredibly helpful staff that made it a treat to stay there, they really helped us through a ticklish situation with advice and translations. thanks again and we will return!
HI - Shanghai Easytour - Mingtown Etour Hostel in Shanghai … This hostel is great. It's very clean and everything is new. The staff are very helpful when you ask them questions. The best part is that all the toilets and showers are one per small room (no huge rooms with lots of showers together), which gives a sense of privacy unlike other hostels. It is tough to find but with a map of Shanghai it's not too difficult. The location on a small residential street adds to the charm and peacefulness. I loved it.
HI - Shanghai - Shanghai Captain Hostel in Shanghai … Honestly, the bathrooms here are much better than any Chinese-run hotels. The dorm bed is really comfortable and clean. I thought it would be cold, but the blanket they provided was sufficient. This has become my place to stay whenever I come to Shanghai for a weekend trip.
HI - Shanghai Mingtown Hiker YH Hostel in Shanghai … absoloutly loved this place, and loving it more the more places we stay. has such a great atmosphere, you can walk out the door straight to the high street and to the bund. really easy to find, and close to the metro. great security, you locks on the door and lockers!!! the showers are clean, hot water is not 24hours, 7-12am and pm. but when its hot its hot probably a lot more quite now that we've left wouldnt recoment the ensuite 6 bed rooms as (and may have just been the people in the room) but they kinda smell of damp, in that "youve just found a swimming costume in a bag that you lost three years ago kind of way". the rooms with the windows were clean and great though. we miss you hikers
Astor House (Pujiang Hotel) in Shanghai … A delightful experience. The list of rooms offered no longer lists any rooms cheaper than 420 yuan, which are the huge doubles with private bath. They do have, however, just 3 rooms at 165 yuan which are a great bargain. Room 607 is the real prize, with an unobstructed view of the entire bund stretching away into the distance -- glorious, especially at night. Ask, just in case any of these three 6th floor rooms are available.
HI - Shanghai Easytour - Mingtown Etour Hostel in Shanghai … I stayed at this hostel two months ago and it was a very nice place. The staff are friendly and helpful, structure inside the hostel is unique with traditional and modern elements, and the washing facilities allow for privacy and comfort. The location is on a small residential street which adds to the flavor however it is a little difficult to find the hostel itself. Look for the "Hostel" triangle sign which right outside. Once you find it you will not be disappointed. There are many special places to see nearby such as People's Square and Nanjing Road. I also suggest the small bakery just up the road. I hope to come back next summer!
HI - Shanghai Mingtown Hiker YH Hostel in Shanghai … Very good hostel. Staff very friendly, rooms and bathrooms clean, free internet, very well located (close to the Bund and not far from People's Square). Definitely one of the best hostels i've been in in the world and the best in China.
HI - Shanghai Mingtown Hiker YH Hostel in Shanghai … One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in, and I've stayed in many. Free internet (that actually works), free laundry, great location fabulous common area, great people, awesome television with stocked dvd collection. There's only hot water from 7-12am and 7-12pm, but unlike a lot of hostels, the water actually gets hot. I know many people who've left other Shanghai hostels to come here, and with good reason.
The Phoenix Hostel in Shanghai … Ok, seriously! I've traveled a lot and I've never found a hostel employee waiting for me at the airport after my flight was late five hours! We arrived at 2:30 a.m. and, to our pleasant surprise, found the hostel employee waiting in the lobby of the airport, with our names (the pick up service is like $20, call/email ahead). We stayed one night in a private and two in the dorm. We found both to be spotless, pleasant, although the beds were a bit hard. There is a restaurant downstairs, really cheap and good. The hostel is more like a hotel unless you stay in the dorm. It's central and pretty easy to navigate. The day front desk staff are awesome, speak great English, and are really really helpful and nice.
HI - Shanghai - Shanghai Captain Hostel in Shanghai … I met some of the coolest people ever here at this hostel on the fourth floor. We had many many many sleepless nights just sitting and chatting about everything. A group of us even took some strange adventure to the ocean and came back the next morning. Isn't that what a youth hostel is about? Meeting other travellers. I'm going back again in July to meet up with some of the kids that were there and I can't wait.
