Salvador Definitely stay in the Pelourinho district. There are a lot of things to do in the area. Beware of beggars and people trying to sale you little ribbons as "gifts" or "presents". They are trying to scam you. Visit the beaches, especially on Sat/Sun.
Iemanja Hostel in Salvador I have been here and it was wonderful.
Albergue Hostel São Jorge in Salvador this hostel is fantastic. i visited this place in my last holidays with three friends and we are very happy in this hostel, because al the people are so friendly, the roommates coming from all parts the world. all the most interesting parts of salvador are so near to the hostel its great. if you can go the please go!
Residencial Das Araras in Porto Seguro This is a nice hostel, it is clean and in a quiet area very close to pristine beaches. The staff was friendly and service was good. The rates per night are inexpensive. I highly recommend this Hostel!!
Pousada Porto D'Ajuda in Porto Seguro I really enjoyed spending time at the pool!!!
HI - Salvador - do Porto Hostel in Salvador Just out of this hostel, had a great time there. Pros are the hostel is kept very clean, linen was changed every day, free nice breakfast, large and comfortable common areas with a cable TV and videos so it's perfect if you want to socialize. Close to the beach, buses that will take you everywhere. Cons are if you want to be in the middle of Pelo, stay there, cause otherwise you will have to take a bus. The shower is warm, but not really hot. The receptionist that speaks English is there in the evenings, otherwise you will have to get around with Portugese. Internet is 2$R for thirty minutes, but screens could be better. Despite that the area was considered safer than Pelo, there was a guy that repeatedly tried to rob people under the threat of a broken bottle. Some people kicked his ass in return, others got scared and were robbed. Other than that, nice hostel, I personally had a time of my life, really recommend to people that want to socialize.
HI - Salvador - Laranjeiras Hostel in Salvador The location can't be beat; it's right in the middle of Pelo. There is also a lot of space to just hang out, sit in a hammock and chat. There is also the coffeehouse where you can meet a lot of other backpackers.
The reason I only give a 3 in my rating is because: 1) the beds smell something awful, like the sweat of 100s of people who slept there before and 2) reception wasn't very helpful or friendly in helping people navigate the city and the region.
Albergue Dos Anjos Hostel in Salvador The Good:
— It is cheap, especially for a single room in comparison to other places
— It is small and has a family like atmosphere
— The owner is a friendly nice guy and will do his best to make sure you settle in
— The location is brilliant... you can see and hear everything from the windows
— They are ok about late check out providing someone else isn't about to be booked into your room
— Breakfast every morning with the door and windows wide open (Thinking about it makes me wish I was back in Salvador)
The Bad and the Ugly:
— The showers were awful. The women's showers were tiny and covered by a small curtain. The men's shower which was in a room where you could lock the door (with a toilet) for privacy had a shower with very low pressure, so I always felt dirty. Plus the water wouldn't drain, so the owner would send one of the staff to mop the water in the shower up...ugh!
— I couldn't fit my knees into the space that was the women's
Albergue e Posada Cancun in Salvador Absolutely awful place. These people are lying, cheating crooks. Having booked our accommodation for Carnival nearly three months in advance we turned up after a thirty-six-hour coach journey to find that our "four-person dorm with private facilities and lockers" did not actually exist. Instead we were given a broom cupboard with a broken bed, broken windows, broken fan, and broken lock on the door. As this was usually where the janitor slept he had to sleep on the floor outside the door. The only bathroom in the entire place was also for the bar downstairs -- you can imagine the state of it during Carnival - sh*t everywhere. Didn't get any sleep and after two hours of lying with the sun burning my face through the broken window at dawn (couldn't block it up because it was the only ventilation in an airless box), we forfeited our deposit, packed our bags and left. We had even heard horror stories about this place from people we met in southern Brazil, but thought it was too late to
Albergue Jardim Brasil in Salvador The hostel is very old and the bath is dirty.
Pousada Daime Sono in Lençóis Pousada Daime Sono is a very nice hostel and Patricia, the owner, speaks good English as well as being extremely friendly and helpful. I stayed in the eight-bed dorm, which was quite big and airy and also had a hammock. The kitchen area is kept clean and has all the basics. I had a great stay here.
