The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Strasbourg - René Cassin Hostel is a normal, standard hostel for a big city in France. Although now a little old fashioned in interior design, it is clean and spacious and offers dorms and also two-bed or single rooms. The hostel has a nice bar and reception area and very friendly staff. Normal continental breakfast is served. A self-catering kitchen is also available.

The Location

The hostel is within walking distance of the city centre and station (twenty minutes). It is situated in parklike terrain in a fairly quiet area next to a camping site and gardens. Try, however, to get a room on the side away from the railway tracks as the trains can sound very loud in the upper stories. There are cycling paths to/from and around the area in wonderful abundance. By bike you can be out in the country, along little rivers, past medieval villages within minutes -- as well as right in the city centre. Strasbourg is very beautiful as a cultural venue and historical centre but also as a cycling or kayaking paradise -- among other things! A bus service is in operation.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms are clean, spacious, and bright with lockable doors. Single rooms with showers are available but expensive. Showers and bathrooms are clean if somewhat run-down and old-fashioned. But everything works!

Common Spaces

The lobby in the reception area has seating and also provides sockets for laptops. There are several games and seating areas in the hostel and lawns outside. A bike garage is also available together with a spacious free car park at the house. The non-smoking hostel is quiet but sociable -- no loud partying but international guests -- and the bar allows easy social contact.

Summary

This is a good, clean hostel of basic standard. It is a good base for exploring Strasbourg and surrounds.

4 Stayed here for three nights in late November for the Christmas Market. It was almost empty, so I had a four-bunk room to myself for two nights! The location of this hostel is really great and close to the center of town. And it doesn't lock you out so you can go back for afternoon naps! It was clean and had the typical bread, cereal, juice, coffee breakfast included. It says you have to be an HI member to stay there, but they also do the stamp system where non-members get stamps for each night they stay, and once you get to six you don't have to pay extra anymore! To get to Rene Cassin, take a tram bound for Elsau and get off at Montagne Verte. It's about a five-minute walk or two-second bus ride on the number 13 from there. Bon Voyage!

2 Place is starting to show its age, could do with a renovation in the near future. Apart from that, the hostel was ok for a few nights stay.

2 I've stayed in many hostels, but this one is really not great at all. Rooms are definitely not so nice as in the pictures on Web site. At least they are clean, as well as the toilets. Breakfast is TOO simple. But I have to say there is a good connection from the hostel to the city center with trams and buses. Good for not very demanding people.

3 The communal showers were lame: basically cold water hoses. Get a room with a private shower, which is much better. The common room is great and the wine is inexpensive. It's a bit out of the way, but the bus service is good.

2 We came here last year on a school trip. We had a great time, but this hostel was not really fantastic. It was very basic, most of the showers did not work, and unisex bathrooms?! That's just wrong!

2 The food here was pretty poor, the showers stunk of urine, the staff were rude, we were followed by some perverted French dude in his pants, and the bar only sold one type of beer or wine. However, a great time was had by all, possibly because we were ever so slightly inebriated for most of the trip!

3 The kitchen sucks, but the place is nicely located. The rooms are very clean and you feel safe here.

2 I stayed at hostel Rene Cassin in Strasbourg - it's pretty grim but cheap and the rooms are clean. No atmosphere to meet people and relax, the kitchen is the worst I've seen in a hostel anywhere but at least they have a kitchen.
