The Hostelz.com Review
Location
This hostel is not in the center of town. From the train station, cross the Avenue du Maréchal Joffre and walk a block along the Rue de la Gare to the Avenue de Paris/Avenue Durand de Gros. Walk a block in either direction to a bus stop. Take the Ligne 1 direction Vieille Gare. Stop at Les Narcisses and the hostel will be right across the street.
Amenities
One look at the glass walls and doors of the reception area and you know the HI-Rodez is definitely a modern urban-type hostel. Located near the edge of town, it's housed in a larger modern building and is kept very clean. Even if it's busy, privacy is premium here: you may book an individual bed and wind up in a private room with an ensuite shower and a desk! The hostel has one of the best complimentary breakfasts around, including juice, yogurt, fruit, breads, cereals, and some of the best espresso you'll ever find at a hostel! The only downside is there may be no milk. Also, if you want some wonderful French cuisine during your stay, you'll have to travel into town because nearby restaurants are limited to Chinese and pizza. Good laundry facilities are available at the hostel, though you'll need to request a special key to access them.
Atmosphere
As with other popular urban hostels, this one can be busy. But the small number of beds per room can still give you all the privacy you need. And it's definitely popular with French students, even during the school-year. The on-site café provides a great place to socialize and adds to the friendly atmosphere here.
Attractions
Although it's by no means a metropolis, Rodez is a decent-sized town for the region, and its hilly topography may draw comparisons to San Francisco. It has the massive sandstone Cathedrale de Notre-Dame, museums, an old town, and is relatively close to the well-preserved pilgrimage site of Conques.
Price
This hostel is competitively priced when compared with other alternative accommodations in the immediate area.
Overall Value
For its privacy, modern amenities, and vibrancy of its clientele, this hostel is a good value for those exploring this area of France's Massif Central.
