What a place! The actual facility of Les Filets Bleus Hostel is tiny and contains a small camping site. In summer the whole place is really crowded as Quiberon is a very popular and lively summer seaside resort. It seems to be a great place for young people though, with loads and loads of tents.
The Location
The hostel is not far from the main (crowded) beach in a very quiet, nice residential neighbourhood -- it's within walking distance to other little ports, pubs, supermarkets. Quiberon is on a beautiful peninsula. It is a busy holiday resort but without mass tourism, and so very pleasant.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The accommodation consists of three small dorms with en-suite bathroom facilities (WC/shower/wash basin, which are dilapidated. They are really ok, the only problem is that they have no windows so you have to leave the door open for fresh air at night. However, the doors open directly onto the yard (and major pedestrian passageway from parking lot at front of hostel into the back "field"). The field is actually used as a small camping site belonging to the hostel.
They also offer one large tent dorm with about seven or eight bunk beds, which you can hire at a cheaper rate than in the dorms. Camping is allowed on hostel's enclosed grounds. There are two showers, sinks, and toilets for the campers -- just not enough! Although the staff are wonderfully kind and friendly, they just cannot keep this place clean. The toilets are really gross! And the showers are always occupied (and dirty). It is almost impossible to keep your clothes dry while showering.
Common Spaces
The hostel's tiny, cramped, self-catering kitchen has inadequate storage facilities for hostelers' food. It would be adequate to serve hostelers staying in the dorms but is far too small for all the campers. So it is always crowded -- people have to pass each other like crabs, forget swinging your cat! And again, the staff cannot keep the place clean -- the bins are always overflowing, no one bothers to separate the waste. The only common room and shelter is a big tent outside where people take breakfast. Otherwise there are chairs and tables outside. Parking spaces are at front of hostel.
Summary
This place seems far too crowded and dirty but there is still a very good atmosphere and the younger guests appear not to be bothered too much by the inadequate facilities. The French generally don't seem to mind dirty kitchens and bathrooms -- smelly toilets and completely inadequate bathroom facilities seem to be a feature of most French hostels (even the good ones). The staff here are absolutely wonderful, although they have a tough job.
