The Hostelz.com Review
Auberge de Jeunesse Noumea is situated at the top of a hill in the central Noumea town area so it involves a bit of climbing up the hill or via a long flight of steps up a steep cliff. It's not the most wheelchair friendly hostel, but if you are able-bodied and happy to do quite a bit of walking up and down a hill, then it is a pleasant and very well organised and maintained hostel.

It's very well organised in that each person gets allocated an individual metal locker in their dorm, a pantry locker in the kitchen/dining area (with your plate, bowl, cup and cutlery in it), and another locker in the walk-in fridge (for perishable food) adjacent to the kitchen. Bed linen, blankets, and a pillow are also provided. The toilets and showers are also kept clean pretty much all of the time. There is also a laundry room for doing your laundry and a locker room for storing luggage if you are planning to be away.

The kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans and cooking utensils with large sinks. There are also two microwaves and a grill.

Housed in a four-storey block, there are double/twin rooms, 4-bed bunk rooms, and 6-bed bunk rooms. There are great views of central Noumea and of St. Joseph Cathedral from the outside dining area and from the upper floors of the dorm block.

Great hostel. I've been here loads of times and never tire of the awesome atmosphere and great facilities. This is the first hostel I ever stayed in and I thought all hostels were like this -- if only! The staff are awesome and bend over backwards to assist. You can't ask for a better location and cleaner facilities.

My advice is to get away from the touristy stuff and mix with the real travellers. l'auberge was definitely the best place we stayed in in New Caledonia. The staff very helpful and the rooms had the best views over the baie de moselle. Loved it.

Very well managed. The view over the city and Baie de Moselle is indeed magnificient. You need good legs to get up there but it's worth the effort. The prices are fair, and the kitchen is well-equipped and sparkling clean. On the other hand, it is very well-known, and it's the only place with reasonable prices--so you had better book in advance. We didn't call ahead, but the manager was kind enough to find us a little place.
