Hostelz.com's Review
HI - Cancale - Mont St Michel Hostel is a quiet, relaxing alternative to other nearby hostels. Don't be scared by the out-of-place location of this hostel, as there is a bus going directly from the SNCF station of St. Malo to the hostel a few times per day. Just make sure you don't arrive too late in the evening.

This is one of the hostels that has a standard HI hostel comfort, but also its own charm. It is located at the “Baie de Mont St Michel,” directly at the seaside. You can see Mont St Michel from the hostel's terrace.

The Location

From the SNCF station St Malo, take the bus line 10 in the direction of Cancale to “Port Picain (Auberge de Jeunesse).” Don't get out at the first bus stop on this route that is just called “Auberge de Jeunesse.” During the summer months, there is a supplementary bus line 17 that brings you to “Cancale – Eglise” and from there on you can take the free navette (shuttle service_ to “Basse Cancale” or walk up to sixty minutes.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are dorms on the second and third floor, in different sizes and forms, since the hostel is shaped by its big roof. We stayed in a large, eight-bed dorm that has seven single beds and one bunk bed (it's half above a wardrobe and half above another bed). The room contains two sinks and a private shower. Toilets are located outside the dorms. There are also six small lockers -- bring your own lock. They will fit an eleven-inch laptop but no larger. The bedsheets they provide are clean. And overall the hostel is very clean and comfortable. Rooms are closed from 10 a.m. to noon.

Common Spaces

Breakfast, served between 7:30 and 9 a.m. on the first floor of the hostel, is by far the best we've had during our trip. The fresh baguettes and the locally produced jams are perfect. In addition to that, they offer cereals, yogurts, orange juice, chocolate powder, hot and cold milk, tea, and coffee.

The self-catering kitchen is well-equipped, with four separate cooking plates and sinks, a microwave, a mini oven, and large fridge. The table in the middle of the kitchen is a bit squeezed, but it is possible to eat self-cooked food in the breakfast room or outside on the terrace. The kitchen is open until 10 p.m., but is closed between 10 to midnight for cleaning.

There is free Wi-Fi in the common areas. A small room called “Passarelle” invites guests to chill with a large book selection.

Summary

This hostel gives you a perfect opportunity to chill out for a few days and visit St Malo, Mont St Michel, and the beaches around Cancale.
