The Hostelz.com Review
The Boulogne-Sur-Mer Hostelling International Hostel is a respectable, if a little clinical, place to stay in Boulogne. Typical of a HI hostel, there is little character of note but, functionality-wise, everything is of a high standard. It is reasonably priced with both dorm and single rooms available. There is free internet at reception and also Wi-Fi.
The Location
Staying at this hostel is the ultimate in convenience if you are traveling by train, and it is also within walking distance (ten minutes) of the town centre and a stone`s throw from the river. The area seems a little oppressive if you are arriving at night (imagine the usual bleak train station surroundings), but it does not feel unsafe in any way. When embarking from Boulogne Ville (not Boulogne Tintelleries) train station, the hostel is situated directly across the road from the main entrance.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorms are very clean and maintained to a good standard. Several are smaller than commonly found in hostels, with some only containing three beds. However, the unusual room shapes mean some beds are placed rather close to one another, which is fine if you are traveling as a couple or in a group. The dorms have their own bathrooms, which are very clean, but the showers are not impressive. Unusually, there is the option of a bath, which is seldom found in similar hostels. All rooms are operated by swipe cards, which provides a sense of security although the bathroom door does not have a lock.
Common Spaces
There are two main common rooms -- the bar and the dining hall/kitchen. The bar is rather small but has a pool table and projector screen for football matches or films. The dining room is larger with plenty of space to find a corner of your own. Although a little austere, the area is clean and pleasant enough. The kitchen is fully equipped with the usual oven, microwave, and kettle. In addition there are free coffee and orange juice machines. Breakfast is included in the price and consists of toast and cereal. The staff are kind enough to lay this out even when guests are departing extremely early.
Summary
If you just need a clean, quiet roof over your head, then this hostel is perfectly adequate. If you`re looking for a livelier place with a focus on character then this probably isn`t for you. However for proximity to the train station, this can't be beat.

Rubbish Rubbish. Food was horrible. Rooms were ok, only had one plug in the room so I couldn't charge my phone, there was a plug in the bathroom but if water got into it, it's a fire risk. One of the chefs looks like a man-lady, the packed lunches we were given were ew. My friend found hairs in her dinner. Unimpressed. — Unimpressed. , England (2011-06-25)
Old dirty and rundown Stayed there for one night and thats enough for a life time. Rooms where dirty, bathrooms where dirty and run down and non of the plugs worked? didnt really meet or talk to the staff, very limited facilities. But if you don't care and just want a place to sleep for a night, even then i wouldn't recommend it. It was somewhat secure though with all the doors and key cards and codes. — Anonymous , england (2010-04-27)

Good I am a year seven pupil and i stayed in this hostel with my school on a weekend trip to France, seven boys got stuck in the elevator, although it was their fault as the doors wouldn't open so they panicked and pressed all the buttons. The hostel is clean, the rooms are nice and spacious, and the breakfasts are nice. I would go there again! — Kellie Jones , English (2008-06-23)
Horrid i stayed on a school trip and the only thing good about the hostel was the chips. the rooms were rundown and the lights would go off when you walk down the stairs. — annoymous , england (2008-06-21)

I was very pleased to find this hostel. — Martin (2005-03-15)

I had the pleasure of residing at this hostel during the summer and I have to say I was impressed. It was as good a hostel as I have stayed ever in, and I have been in more than a few. It was very clean, central, friendly, with a cozy little bar and a friendly barmaid who was kind enough to help me with my French. Merci beaucoup, au revoir. — Martin, London (2005-03-02)

We recently stayed in this hostel on a school trip. I thought it was a great hostel, although the facilities were a bit dated. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly. I would definitely go back there in the future. — Anonymous (2004-08-05)

Having stayed in many hostels in my travels around Europe, I can honestly say that YHA Boulogne is one of the best I've stayed in. Great rooms, friendly staff, delicious food, superb location and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. I'll be back next year!! — Anonymous (2004-07-20)

Upon entering the hostel I was filled with sudden fear; it seemed more like a hotel than hostel, and I figured the cost would reflect that. I was pleasantly surprised to find that that was not the case, and I quickly became friends with the generous staff! The daily dinner is enough to keep you more than happy. Wash it down with some of the easily accessible local wine and you're golden. I must say that as far as cleanliness, happiness and any other ness's go, YHA Boulogne kicks arse any day of the week! — Steve the Canadian (2004-07-11)
