Great location, building, awful staff
As a single male traveler who is a bit shy and quiet, I often get a little rudeness from staff in these places. My experience in this one was way over the top, however. The blonde German guy at reception seemed to take offense that as I had one day in Biarritz and had just arrived at 1 p.m., I preferred to get a couple of hours at the famous beaches rather than sit and drink with the surfer dudes in the bar. I also lost my wallet somewhere in the Hostel and was met with rudeness from him when I enquired as to whether it had been handed in (no chance, and I was interrupting him chatting up a pair of french girls anyway). His obvious and ageist disgust of anyone over the age of twenty-five was sickeningly apparent and it was not confined to him either. Its good point lies in its handy location next to the train station, though it is a long way from the beaches. In short, if you are twenty-one, Blonde, and a surfer then this place will be paradise.

This is a great place to stay if you have an early train or something like that because the only thing it is close to is the train station. The internet is really expensive and slow. The bar was not open while I was there. I liked the room set-up and it was really clean.

This place seemed like it would be a really great hostel to stay in over the summer months. It did however seem far away from the center of town. We liked it because it was close to the train station. While we were there in January it was empty except for two other guys. It was actually the fist day they had been open in a couple weeks. The staff was really nice and gave us a breakfast bag to take since our train was leaving too early to enjoy the complimentary breakfast. He also gave us a free drink at dinner because the vending machines hadn't been filled yet. Awesome! The building itself was newer and all the facilities were nice and clean. Overall it was great, but no other people were around which was kinda weird. Also double check the map directions -- we got lost for a bit and ended up hiking up an extra hill or two with our backpacks -- not fun.

We stayed in June of 2005. The hostel is clean and has a very comfortable feel about it. There are lockers, a bar, and sheets for rent, but the hours of the desk are kind of inconvenient and it is a decent walk from the beach and city center. The walk is not that bad and took us about 30 minutes, plus it's a good thing to sober you up from the late nights in the city. Otherwise you can take the bus and see a little of the neighborhoods around downtown, which is pretty cool. There is a great bakery up the street and a cool meat market run by a very friendly butcher, and it's right next to the train station.

I stayed here for two nights in May 2003. The hostel is quite close to the station, but very, very far from city center by foot (at least 45 minutes) and buses do not run on Sunday. The hostel at least is quite new and well equipped. The staff were unfriendly. The worst thing about this hostel is its bad location. But Biarritz is really worth enjoying (surf, sea, etc.).

Biarritz is a fabulous place to begin with, and this hostel is an ideal spot to start from. It's not right in the city center, but it's in a lovely green area by the lake and woodland, within walking distance of the station, and a 15-minute bus ride from town and the beaches. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and they were English-speaking on this occasion. There is a little bar with cheap beer where you can watch surfing videos all evening if that is your penchant. Great meals are available for E5.50 (main meal) or E9 for the whole lot (our meals were salmon, duck and steak - I don't get THAT at home!) so you really can stuff yourself on a pittance. The place is full of surfer kids, but even if this isn't your bag, it's easy to make idle chatter with nice people over dinner or a drink in the bar. We were given a double room on arrival at no extra cost, complete with en suite bathroom. Internet access is available, as well as bikes for hire. This place is very clean and comfortable, and you can get a very good night's sleep here. It has a great atmosphere, lovely staff, and it's in a good area. I can't recommend this hostel highly enough!
