Lloyds Lodge Backpackers is a homey, pleasant place to stay in the Bay of Plenty -- ideal for travelers looking to visit White Island. Housed in a classic kiwi villa with lots of charm, Lloyds is a laid-back place that welcomes backpackers with unusual hospitality that makes you want to stay longer.
The Location
The hostel is located on one of the main streets in town. Whether driving east or west on the main motorway you'll drive past. It's across the street from a twenty-four-hour McDonald's, down the street from KFC, and around the corner from the supermarket. Plenty of off street parking is available. The downtown area is about a ten-minute walk away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Lloyds is a classic old villa with high ceilings and quaint decorations. The dorm rooms are pretty basic, but bright. The beds are not made up, so you'll need to bring linens or hire them. The mattresses seem a bit thin. There's one massive bathroom with a tub (which you are not allowed to use, because it takes all the hot water to fill), plus a separate shower and two toilets in other areas. All are kept clean and in good order.
Common Spaces
The kitchen is quite large, with a central island and cooktop. There's free coffee, tea, and garden herbs. Plenty of shelf space is available for food, but the best feature is probably the dishwasher. In the same open area there are two dining tables, one in a sunny alcove that gets nice morning sun. The TV room has free DVDs you can watch. In the rear there's a computer with internet access -- wireless is also available for a fee. Out back there's a porch and free barbecue.

This hostel is a real gem. This cash-only operations is run by the owners, who will not only call you the day before to confirm your booking, but take the time to show you around upon arrival. They're also happy to make reservations for you to join the day trips sailing to White Island, which is convenient and totally worth it. The atmosphere is decidedly laid back and quiet. There are no locks on the rooms, but the outside door has a code to get in at night. Whether staying for a day or a week, you'd be hard pressed to find a more pleasant place to stay in Whakatane.
