The Hostelz.com Review
El Centro del Mundo Hostel is a huge maze of a house located in a convenient area of Quito. There's tons of information on the walls, it´s cheap and safe, and has a cool atmosphere.
The Location
El Centro del Mundo is located in the tourist area of New Town. In the same block are tons of other hostels, bars, restaurants, bookshops, and internet cafes. It´s close to a stop on the Ecovia bus line and about a fifteen-minute walk down Colon Street from the Trole, both of which make it easy to get to the Old Town and other parts of the city. From either of the bus terminals or the airport, these lines are the cheapest way of getting to the hostel. There have been a number of incidents involving robbery on some of the streets in the area, so it´s best not to wander around alone at night, but during the day it seems fine and there are usually lots of people walking around.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are a couple of options -- both dorms and private rooms for different prices -- so ask to have a look at whichever are available. If you can put up with a cramped and dark room, they are an absolute steal -- otherwise there are nicer, lighter, and larger rooms for only slightly more. They can be loud if people are noisy around the pool table. The bathrooms are small and dark but are clean enough and the showers have hot water although not at a great pressure.
Common Spaces
The hostel has a dining room; TV lounge; and an outside area with tables, chairs, and a pool table. There is a small kitchen, although it doesn´t look too clean, but the hostel has a cafe where you can order food at any time of the day (or night). Breakfast is included in the rates but it is just two pieces of toast, some butter, jam, and tea/coffee. You can add extras for a low price from the cafe. There's tons of information on Quito and the surrounding areas decorating the walls and the staff are really helpful. They organise free events ever night including rum-and-coke night and salsa lessons (these are on Thursdays -- highly recommended)!
Summary
It´s a nice place with a lot of different rooms options. It can be a bit loud but the free events are great to meet other travelers. The house is a bit of a maze but the lounge and dining room are good places to relax. It´s safe and friendly and the location is great!
