The Hostelz.com Review
Captain Bobs is a quiet, comfortable hostel in a residential district. For those with their own vehicles, parking is available in front of the building.
The Location
Though the hostel is within walking distance of the Intercity bus stop at the wharf, parts of the route are uphill, so you may want a taxi, especially if you have luggage. Be sure to get off at the wharf; Intercity also stops "for backpackers" at the hostels on Kings' Road in Paihia, and that's much farther away from Captain Bobs. There's a Countdown supermarket only three blocks away. Paihia's wharf, the center of tourist activity, is six or seven blocks in the opposite direction.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Captain Bobs has two dorms -- a female-only dorm upstairs and a mixed dorm downstairs -- and double and twin rooms are also available (the smallest double can be rented as a single). Both dorms have blue metal bunk-beds.
There are two toilets and a shower upstairs, shared by the guests in the female dorm and two of the doubles. These are much like ordinary bathrooms in a private home, except for the stern warning sign requesting five-minute showers. There is changing space in front of the shower, though while we were there, most residents simply stayed out of the shower-and-sink area entirely while someone was showering.
Downstairs, there is a more institutional-looking bathroom with a concrete floor, featuring several showers, several toilets, and the washers and dryers (laundry is on the expensive side, but the machines are modern and work well and there is a clothesline for those who prefer it). This bathroom is shared by the guests in the mixed dorm and the guests in the other five doubles and twins.
Common Spaces
A well-equipped kitchen, a dining room with a beautiful view, and a reading lounge with a book exchange are all upstairs. Downstairs in an annex is the TV room, which also contains one kiosked computer. In the TV room are a comfortable sofa and several plush beanbags. The Wi-Fi internet works in all rooms, and the hostel has both Tomizone and Zenbu.
Guests in the doubles are mostly older couples; the age when we were there ranged from thirty to seventy. Dorm guests are mostly of traditional age. Most hostelers here are European and everyone is friendly -- there is quite a bit of socializing, especially over supper.
Summary
Captain Bobs is a good choice for those who are looking for peace, quiet (except for traffic noise from the nearby highway), and a beautiful sea view from the common rooms. Some people may be irked by the strict rules and regulations -- no food or drink in rooms, no street shoes to be worn in the common areas, quiet encouraged by 10 p.m. and enforced after 11. We enjoyed our stay.
