Used as a stopover point by big cruise ships, the small center of Sorrento can fill up easily with sticker wearing tourists buying expensive souvenirs. The town of Sorrento is a good base for those doing day trips to the Amalfi Coast, Naples, Capri and Ischia. And to walk through the main entrance door of the Ulisse Hostel in Sorrento makes 50% of the arriving backpackers turn around and think they are at the wrong place. The Ulisse Hostel was planned as a 4-star hotel, but did not receive the permits needed from the town's council. Now it offers 4 dormitories and many private rooms so it can stay open.
The Location
Just off Sorrento's main strip, nearly at the end of town and a 15 minute walk from the train station. A local bus coming from the station (Circumvesuviana Line) drops you off right in front of the hostel. Ask for the Marina Grande bus, it passes the Ulisse hostel on the way to the water front.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Welcome to one of the cleanest hostels in Italy. Dorms and private rooms all come with a bathroom. Nice wooden furniture and clean bunk beds make you feel homey right away. If you never stayed in a mid-range hotel, well, that is what they look like inside. Very clean sheets and soft towels, hot water all day and night and soft toilet paper are all inclusive. If a private room is in your budget, well, all rooms are bright and come with big beds and TV.
Common Spaces
Remember, the Ulisse was planned as a 4-star hotel, so that explains the well dressed staff behind the reception and the bar in the lounge. And the whole expensive looking interior of the hostel. Comfortable armchairs and couches invite for a normal priced drink and snack. Lean back and chat with guests from all over the world, some stay at the hostel after they booked with the big vacation offering companies and the hostesses responsible for those guests can be seen there every day. The hostels staff is rich on information when it comes to planning day trips and gives guests a discount for the swimming pool and spa underneath the hostel. Yes, a spa. Massages and much more a traveler wants is offered. Females will love the pedicure. The rich all you can eat breakfast buffet is an extra 5€. Car parking is offered in the garage. The internet and wifi comes expensive. In the lounge, a big flat screen TV shows many stations, including English news channels.
Summary
Enjoy the spoils of the Ulisse Hostel as long as they offer dorm beds to travelers, because once the hostel receives the necessary permits to run as a hotel, the dorms will be closed and budget travelers will not be able to afford staying in a luxury looking place like this. This place was supposed to become a 3 or 4 star hotel, but they did not get the license from the town of Sorrento. No it is a hostel with dorms and all kind of private rooms. When you walk in, you might want to turn around, the place looks to good and pricey to be true. Spotless clean, super friendly, close to all that is interesting, 5€ all you can eat breakfast with cheese, ham and salami, different cereals, bread and croissants etc. There is a spa with pool underneath and staying at the hostel gives you a good discount. The bar serves snacks and drinks. Bathrooms are big and very clean, sheets and towels are included. And the price is very ok for what you get. — backpackernews , RSA (2008-09-14)
