The Hostelz.com Review
Bob and Maxine's Backpackers is a comfortable, modern hostel that's the perfect place to slow down and relax. The friendly owners live just across the parking lot, and do their best to foster a comfortable communal experience.

The Location

The hostel is a bit out of the way, located a short drive north of town in a new development. However, signage is good and it would be difficult to miss. The town centre is a bit away if you don't have a car, so it's best to take advantage of the free bicycles they offer to get into town. If you are fortunate enough to have four wheels, there is ample parking available in a gravel lot. There's no public transport available, but the hostel is located on the main road out of town headed to Milford Sound.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are no door locks at the hostel. The dorm rooms sleep six, and there are two twin rooms available. The owners are pretty flexible about making accommodations; for example they put an extra bed in one of the dorm rooms so a group of seven could all stay together. The dorm beds are not made up, but if you ask nicely the owners will give you sheets and a heavy blanket. All rooms also have sliding doors that open to the porch.

The bathrooms are very large and modern. There's plenty of room to maneuver and some hooks to hang your stuff on while you shower. The showers are walk-in affairs with curtains around you, but privacy is not a concern as each bathroom has only one shower and a locking door. Water pressure is good and there's plenty of hot water to go around.

Common Spaces

The common areas really make this hostel. The central lounge and kitchen are an open floor plan with a high ceiling, so it's quite open and airy. There are two ovens and hobs, along with plenty of plates and cooking utensils. There is free coffee and tea. There are two large tables to eat at and meet the other guests. A woodburning stove is usually going all day, fed by the guests and the owners from the free woodpile. There's a decent size TV with a modest collection of free DVDs to watch from one of the couches. Internet (and wireless) is available -- they have an honesty jar and ask for a small amount per half-hour. Outside, there is a barbecue and the porch that runs the front of the hostel. It's a great place to chill out at the end of the day.

Summary

Bob and Maxine's is a pretty relaxed and friendly place. It's usually quiet as most guests are tranquilized by the fire and ample lounge room. The owners will take you around and introduce you to everyone when you check in. If you have limited mobility or are in a wheelchair this hostel would be a good choice -- everything is on one level and there are no stairs to contend with.
