Hostelz.com's Review
"A resort disguised as a hostel" -- this is Absolute Backpackers' tag line, and for the most part we found this to be true. The staff are very friendly and helpful and there is a laid back atmosphere to match the relaxing surroundings.

The Location

The hostel is located in Wongaling Beach (part of Mission Beach known as Middle Mission) -- about five kilometers from main Mission Beach, but it's a pleasant walk along the beach. Just five minutes' walk away is a supermarket and a selection of small shops including the bus terminal. The beautiful, fourteen-kilometer beach is just three minutes' walk away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

We stayed in a double room, which was fully air-conditioned and very nice! The room is clean and well looked after and there is also a sink provided, which is handy. The dorms also appear to be very nice and spacious.

Bathrooms are again clean and well looked after however there is only one set per sex and they are located on the ground floor -- all the bedrooms are on the first floor, so this is a bit annoying in the night! The showers are quite powerful and as hot as you want them.

Common Spaces

The hostel is set in a lot of tropical green space, which is very pleasant and relaxing, and there is also a well maintained pool with a spa, which is perfect for a cool down. There is also a BBQ provided for guests.

The kitchen is cleaned deeply once a day, which means it is always pretty clean and all the equipment is full functional. There is plenty of equipment for all guests to use including a small oven. There was a lack of pans and knives, but other than that there is nothing missing -- there's even free tea and coffee provided. The only downside is that one side of the kitchen is open, which keeps it cool, but allows in a lot of flies.

There is an internet room provided with five computers, but unfortunately the internet (not global gossip) is quite expensive and very temperamental -- going off at times and refusing to load pages for no reason and not logging out properly so your time is being used up. This was very frustrating and lets down the rest of the hostel.

Summary

This is a lovely hostel with lovely permanent staff and beautiful grounds; unfortunately it is let down slightly by the internet problems and also the taking on of backpackers as staff almost everyday, which means the staff are constantly being taught how to do things so they are not very helpful. However we would definitely choose to stay here again if we were back at Mission Beach -- we really enjoyed our stay.

5   Lovely hostel, location, and staff We stayed here for 3 nights and it was lovely. The hostel is one of the best and has beautiful grounds and a nice clean pool perfect for relaxing by and cooling off in! Our double room was clean and comfortable with adjustable airconditioning. Although the bathrooms are downstairs from all the rooms -- a little inconvenient in the middle of the night -- they were clean and well maintained. Kitchen was spacious and well equipped. The staff were lovely, in particular Peta the lady in charge (owner) who was very friendly and took an interest in her guests. Would stay here again, and Mission Beach is a lovely place to relax.  , England ()
4   Friendly Personnel, a big kitchen! this place was awesome, nice People, and we had big fun the time we stayed there. The Staff was absolutely friendly! Thanks for the time!  , Germany ()
2   Do not stay here! The rooms were tiny and I mean our double was just the bed. No room around it for our bags. it was also filthy and falling apart. the room was so cracked we had loads of bugs and even huge lizards finding their way in. But the worst thing was that they have to huge alsatian dogs there. And one attacked me on our second day. i didnt want to stay the next day but they wouldnt give us our money back, even though I think the dog attacking me is a pretty good reason not to want to stay. The dogs were allowed in the TV room so it stunk of sh*t. Every single person there complained of the smell in the TV room but they still let the dogs in there. It was disgusting, you couldnt even go in there. Also it is miles away from anywhere so you have to get the shuttle bus everywhere which is so annoying, and mission beach has nothing to do whatsoever! really boring, do not go there at all!  , British ()
5   Best hostel in Australia! This place is great! Clean, friendly, great communal area, free Sat night BBQ, films to watch, swimming pool, badminton -- I could go on. The staff make you feel so welcome at all times and nothing is too much trouble. We only wish we could have stayed longer.  , Scotland ()
1   Extermely bad customer service -- very rude lady! We turned up at 7.30 pm the reception was closed and because we told the owner we would be there at 6.30pm but our bus was late she decided to cancel our room and charge my card and was extremely rude to us! I couldnt believe it, what kind of hostel closes the reception that early and cancels your room if you are a bit later than expected fair enough if it was 11pm! We had been warned by someone at the bus stop to beware of the witch and we thought oh how bad could it be. Its a shame because the hostel is very new and modern and clean but the owner has a notorious reputation in the area to be a very rude and aggrresive character!  , England ()
5   Really friendly and personal! Loved Absolute Backpackers. The lady who owns it is really friendly and helpful and informative. She booked our skydive for us and came out to see us in the evening after we had done it to ask how it was. We only spent two nights there but she knew us (and everyone else, it seems) by name. So chatty and friendly. The facilities were really good and there was even an oven and a freezer (not things you find in a lot of hostels!). By booking the skydive through the hostel we got a night's free accommodation -- can't argue with that! The only thing that lets this hostel down is the lack of air-conditioning. Our dorm got really stuffy at night in this tropical northern location -- air-con would have made a big difference. But overall, it was great.  , Ireland ()
