The Hostelz.com Review
City Hostel Seattle is a great location for those wanting an affordable and clean place to stay close to downtown Seattle. The atmosphere is friendly, and there staff are helpful.

The Location

The hostel is located about a five minutes' walk from the Space Needle, and is about a ten-minute walk from Pike Place Market. The neighbourhood feels relatively safe, and is being cleaned up. For visitors arriving on the Seattle Clipper, the hostel is within walking distance from the terminal. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, and pubs in the area, and there's a corner store with necessities about a block away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are spotless, if small, and the dorm rooms have sinks and lockers. Each room exhibits works by a particular artist, whose biography and photograph are posted on the door. The largest dorm rooms only have four beds in them, and it's possible to reserve a room with an ensuite bathroom, although this costs more. Double rooms are also available for those who want more privacy. Inside each room is a piece of paper for suggestions. The rooms are secure, and entrance is by way of electronic key card. The shared bathrooms are spacious and constantly kept clean, and offer both showers and bathtubs.

Common Spaces

This hostel offers ample common space where visitors can socialize with other guests. Although it's not a party hostel, it is a friendly hostel, and there is sometimes baking for sale by donation in the kitchens. There is free Wi-Fi access as well as four computer terminals with Skype and webcams. The hostel has a library complete with tables, chairs, and chess set, as well as a movie theatre. Visitors can choose DVDs from the hostel's collection and reserve a time to play them.

There is a small area for laundry, and another common room in the basement decorated with scarves and cushions. This is also where the free breakfast is held in the mornings. Each floor has a huge kitchen with dishwasher that also serves as a common space. There is a free luggage storage for travelers who need to lock up their luggage for a few hours. The hostel also has a small outside terrace with hot tub that is operational until 10 p.m.

Summary

Overall, this is a great hostel for those wishing to visit Seattle. It is situated close to everything and has plenty to do at the hostel itself. The neighbourhood is up-and-coming, and the hostel is secure, as a key card is needed to open the front door.

5  Stunning! When you walk into this hostel you feel like you are surrounded by mindful and fun folks. The employees were very informative and genuinely kind. They didn't over invade but also made us feel welcome. We are quiet, keep to ourselves kind of people so we appreciated that. We happened to be there on the eve before Tofurkey Day and they offered a free community meal. We didn't attend, again because we like to keep to ourselves but we thought it was nice to be offered such a special meal at the hostel. This hostel was super clean. They have a library, computer room, hot tub, kitchen on every floor and plenty of clean bathrooms. We got a private room which was very nice. Some things that could have been better was that the heat was turned on too high and the blinds didn't block out the city lights of Seattle, maybe different window dressings would solve that. I recommend bringing an eye mask if you're sensitive. Also some guest on our floor slammed their doors when they went in and out of their rooms. But I don't hold what the guests do against the hostel. I think it's important to be able to speak up for yourself and not expect management of any type of business to know what offends you. Folks are just different from each other. There was a great vibe of the place and it was spacious and is located in a great spot in Seattle. I plan on going back!  , United States ()
5  One of the best hostels I've stayed at The staff here was fantastic! They were extremely helpful with finding interesting stuff in the city. Matt, one of the staff members, held an impromptu beer pub crawl he dubbed brewscapade. It was a blast!  , USA ()
5  Great Location, Incredible Service I stayed at the City Hostel Seattle this past week and had a very good experience. The staff were very friendly, and it was the cleanest hostel I have stayed in. It was really more of a Bed and Breakfast type place to me than a traditional Hostel. The owners were around a lot and were always asking about the guests about their stay and their trip and if they could help in any way. And, in Spain, we have great coffee and I was surprised and happy to smell fresh coffee being ground every morning at breakfast. So, it was a great time there in many ways.  , Spain ()
5  Best place i have stayed in during my trip! Stayed for 6 nights. By far the best hostel i have ever stayed in! great facilities, free breakfast, free internet, super friendly staff and guests. Evening activities were varied, from poetry slams to art walks to nights out -- made a change to the constant pub crawls everywhere else! Rooms and bathrooms were nice and clean, good location, have no complaints at all about the place -- would go back.  , British ()
2  Very disappointed with one management -- unprofessional, hurtful! When I went back to the Hostel to pick up my backpack later on (after I checked out earlier), I checked with the front-line staff to make sure it was ok for me to use the bathroom and make some hot water to drink for my sore throat -- the response was: "Yes, sure." (during my 2 nights stay, the heat in the room was so high which further aggravated my flu condition). This guy -- supposedly from management -- went after me and found me in the 2nd floor of the kitchen. He accused me of "checking out their fridge on the third floor". I told him that was the floor I stayed in; that there was people using the kitchen, that's why I decided to use the downstairs kitchen to boil water. As for his uncalled for comment earlier, I was trying to retrieve my food which I had left the night before when I arrived. He said: "When you check-out, you aren't supposed to return and use our facility!" I did ask for "permission" to use the facility. I don't appreciate his rude comment especially when I'm feeling sick -- it's VERY hurtful. I'm not a thief!!! Another staff was present and saw me coughing badly; knowing I had already checked out; he still asked if there was anything he could do to help ease my symptom. I had to hold back tears telling him what this management had said to me a few moments earlier -- even he was shocked! This hostel isn't the HI; essentially, it's stealing the business of the well-established HI hostels, without practicing or believing in the real philosophy behind REAL hostel. I have had good experience staying in HI hostels-meeting great people and getting to hear about their experiences about their trips, etc; so I decided to try out even the non-HI ones only to experience this boot-camp treatment. Well, by the action of this management, he has made it easy for me NEVER to return and I certainly would be telling EVERYBODY about my experience!!!  , Canada ()
4  Great location, clean rooms and toilets, friendly staff I stayed at this hostel for three nights in December. The people there are really friendly and helpful. It's close to downtown and Belltown is a cool area to go out for a drink.  , Australia ()
4  Nice but lacking usual conveniences The nearest laundry is almost 60 blocks away; you're better off taking it in to Seattle Center. While there is internet access, there is no printer; you'll have to go to kinkos or stand in line for your boarding pass. There are only 3 toilets/2 showers for the 3 floors full of guests; if you've got to be somewhere at a particular time, plan accordingly. Other than that, people are very nice, very helpful, and go way out of their way to make you feel at home.  , USA ()
5  Friendly, Clean, and Affordable I stayed two nights at this hostel back in June and have to say that it's one of the nicest places that I've ever stayed at. The night I arrived, the staff and travelers were relaxing and talking. The owners come to greet you in the morning and, on one night, dropped by to hang out. Everyone there tries to cultivate a fun, safe and clean environment, and their efforts seem to be working. Very well-run and very, very clean. It's really like a home away from home.  , United States ()
