The Hostelz.com Review
The best thing about Hostel El Español is that it is easy to find. The worst thing is that it is very cold in the colder months and this certainly hinders most social activities that could possibly result. This means that the hostel is also quite quiet and a little boring.
The Location
The hostel is easy to find -- it is a very short walk from the bus station and ferry ports. It is also based just outside of the really old town although where it is based is also the old town, which you can tell by the architecture of the building. This makes it quite a quirky place to stay. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly apart from a few dogs.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms are clean and spacious, although they are not entirely secure. Keys are not handed out to everyone on arrival and the dorm door is pretty much permanently open or unlocked. There is room for your luggage under your bed so bring a padlock. For the more prudent, the hostel also offers lockers with a deposit to keep your stuff. Private rooms are also available.
We booked a four-bed dorm, but were put in the eight-bed dorm as the hostel seems to have some trouble with the booking system. The eight-bed dorm is spacious, so this is not much of a problem. As a comfort feature, the hostel also provides towels, soaps, and sheets, which seem to be replaced on a daily basis. The showers and bathrooms are average, but do have space to change and hooks for your clothes. One downside is that the toilets always seem to be busy so the hostel would benefit by installing more.
Common Spaces
There is a fully equipped kitchen for self-catering with a room outside for eating. You can also eat in the lounge/TV room, which has even more tables and chairs as well as sofas for reading and watching TV. The TV comes complete with a DVD player. This is where two desktop computers with free internet are stationed. There is also outside seating in the back yard where you can also dry their clothes.
Summary
If you are not too picky about your accommodation, you cannot go too far wrong by choosing this hostel for a short stay. It is clean, comfortable, and in a prime location. It is probably worth purchasing your own breakfast, though, because the hostel will provide you with a very basic one but at quite an expensive price.
