The Hostelz.com Review
Location
The Nightingale Lodge hostel is fairly close to the city center and easy to find. From Lime Street station, head south down Lime Street to the Y-intersection at Leece and Berry. Bear left on Leece and continue straight to Catharine Street. Turn right and it will take you to the intersection of Upper Parliament Street and Princes Road. The hostel is across the street on the east side of Princes Road.
Common Spaces
The first thing you'll probably notice about the hostel is its charming exterior and stairwell entrance at the reception desk. This is carried over into the spacious common areas, both inside and outside. However, by comparison, bedrooms and bathrooms are decidedly average, though by no means filthy. The kitchen is well kept and nearly all stainless steel. Those who don't cook will be glad to know that a decent breakfast is included in the night's stay. Internet access is available at the hostel.
Liverpool's designation as the European Capital of Culture for 2008 has brought and influx of development money and an influx of visitors to see what that money paid for. As a result the hostel maintains a very friendly international atmosphere that will surely linger beyond 2008. Even without the Capital of Culture designation, Liverpool-Birkenhead would still have no shortage of things to do and see.
Summary
Rates at the Nightingale Lodge are not necessarily that cheap, but keep in mind this is in an urban area whose tourist appeal is growing since its stint as European Capital of Culture, and a budget traveler won't necessary do any better in other types of accommodations. All in all, the Nightingale Lodge is a worthy place to stay while checking out the bustling city of Liverpool. In fact, it's just fab.
