The Hostelz.com Review
Arthouse Hostel is a good hostel for either longer or shorter stays in Launceston. The style is uncommon -- the building is registered as a Heritage Building and the furniture inside is a mix of old different styles. But it has been renovated, and everything is clean. It is pretty quiet.
The Location
The hostel is well located -- it's easy to find. Cross the bridge on Tamar Street and turn left at the roundabout. You can park directly in the street. A supermarket is about five minutes' drive. The Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery, the Railway Museum, and the Arts Campus of the University of Tasmania are really close. As it is next to the river, you can take a walk there.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are different dorms -- eight, six, and four beds shared with either bunked or single beds -- but there are also singles, twins, and doubles. All the rooms are on three floors, so you might have to carry your luggage through stairs, and the last one is really narrow. The mattresses are good, but you need your own linen or have to hire it. The bathrooms are clean and quite new. There are even some private showers and hand soap is provided on the sink.
Common Spaces
There are kitchens, quite large and clean, on the ground and first floors. There are tables and chairs, so you can have lunch or dinner here, or in the lounge. There are a lot of dishes for cooking, big fridges, and ovens. Washing machines and dryers are in the ground floor kitchen. The lounge is quite large, but you'll prefer the plasma TV in the Tassie Room, at the entrance, to watch movies where you can borrow DVDs. Computers are available in this room with internet access (but it's not free). A barbecue in the courtyard is always nice.
Summary
We recommend this hostel, as it is clean and cheap and the atmosphere is excellent. The ground floor kitchen is really nice and big and just next to the lounge and the courtyard. The dorms are spacious enough, but it is a shame that you have to hire linen or sleep in your sleeping bag.
