The Hostelz.com Review
The justifiably popular Rucksack Inn is one of the best hostels you're likely to come across, as it's packed with facilities.
The Location
Located centrally in Singapore, just outside Chinatown, it's close to Singapore's excellent public transport network of buses and underground trains. The main city sights are also within walking distance, although a taxi or some public transportation may be required at least one way for the Singapore Flyer as it's a bit further, and cheap restaurants and food stalls are just around the corner in Chinatown.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The spotlessly clean dorm rooms consist of bunk beds and contain lockers for personal items. Beds are comfortable and from 10:30 p.m., it's low lighting only, which helps those who are trying to get to sleep. The dorms themselves are never locked but security is tight at the front door with key card access and twenty-four-hour reception.
The hostel only has two showers and two toilets which is certainly under requirements for such a busy place. The facilities themselves, however, are excellent. As with everywhere else in the hostel, they are spotlessly clean. Toilets always have toilet paper (not always guaranteed in Asian hostels) and showers have generous hooks for clothing and racks for toiletries. The hostel also provides free shampoo and shower gel.
In addition to the shower/toilet facilities, there is also a row of three sinks and a large mirror along one side of the common room for brushing teeth, washing hands/face, or doing make-up/hair, which helps free up shower space a little. This makes a noticeable difference in morning and evening. Bed linen is included in the price, although towels are not (but you can rent them for a small charge).
Common Spaces
The hostel has a great common area with free television, DVDs, Wii, and wireless internet as well as three common internet terminals that are also free. This room is brightly decorated and comfortably furnished. The hostel doesn't have full cooking facilities, although there is a toaster, microwave, hot/cold water machine, and a table with chairs located in the room with the washing machines. The Rucksack Inn offers free toast and tea and coffee all day long in this area.
Summary
The little touches make this hostel stand out. There are numerous clocks located throughout so you don't miss that appointment or flight; the price includes all bed linen, entertainment, internet, lockers, tea/coffee, and toast so you're not continuously paying for all the little extras; and shoes are not permitted inside, which keeps the whole hostel permanently clean irrespective of the number of guests or weather outside. It is a perfect hostel for backpackers traveling or those just stopping over en route to a connecting destination. The Rucksack Inn is a safe place to stay and excellent base for meeting lots of new people.

Very clean and modern; thick, comfortable mattress; and friendly staff Recommended by some friends from London who stayed for a few nights, and it is really modern, cosy, and private. Very clean and thick mattresses and love the free breakfast every morning. — Jonash C. , Sydney, Australia (2007-12-29)
