The Hostelz.com Review
Plateau Lodge is a very cosy, family-run place with a couple of very nice extras such as free Wi-Fi throughout the whole compound and a free hot tub spa! The owners, who run the place on their own, are absolutely wonderful and will go far out of their way to help guests. When we arrived, for example, we were told that because of high winds predicted for the next day, it wouldn't be possible to see Tongariro Crossing, which we had come solely to see. The owner canceled our reservations without hesitation and gave us wonderful tips on what to do a bit further up north and then promised to call us back as soon as the Crossing would open again -- and he did a few days later! What a service!

The Location

In National Park Village on a quiet side street with close to zero traffic sits this really lovely hostel. It is easy to find and an ideal location for exploring the Tongariro park all year round. Just across the street is a shop where you can buy or rent all gear you might possibly need to hike up the mountains be it summer or winter. All other facilities in the village (which aren't many -- bring your own supplies) are easily reached on foot. Cars can be parked on the premises, but bigger mobile homes might be a bit tricky to navigate inside the parking lot. There is a shuttle from the lodge to the start of Tongariro Crossing and a pickup service in the afternoon. This is a real help and comes at a very reasonable price. The shuttle leaves daily at two different times so you can choose how much time you want to spend on the mountain.

Rooms and Bathrooms

As it's a small place, there aren't that many rooms -- there are a couple of private rooms with and without en-suite and two dorms that can sleep four people in two bunks. The dorms share a spotless bathroom with really good showers at the end of the hallway but have their own sinks. The dorms are cosy with clean carpet; good, non-squeaky beds; and thick duvets. Dorms as well as privates have huge window fronts that open up to a terrace-like outdoor area. The rooms offer enough room for their guests and keep them warm in the winter month through their modern heating system. There are no security lockers but if you feel insecure you may leave valuables with reception.

Common Spaces

There is a small kitchen with all the necessary cooking utensils, microwave, oven, stove, and fridge. There are no herbs, salt, or oil, though, so bring your own. A counter divides the kitchen from the living area with sofas, a huge TV, some books, and magazines and also a huge window front. Around the corner are seating options for dining in a very lovely, rustic style with benches and tables made out of logs. Everything is absolutely spotless. There is also a very nice free hot spa, which every guest can enjoy for half an hour daily for free. You can register a certain time (say, after the return from Tongariro Crossing) and have the tub all for yourself or also share it with up to six others. Other facilities include self laundry and tour bookings.

Summary

To stay at this place is an absolute pleasure. It is so cosy and friendly you will feel at home the minute you arrive and might end up spending an extra few days!
