Hostelz.com's Review

Well, 98SG isn't great, but what can you expect for the extremely low price? It starts on the second floor of a building over top of Mayflower Foods. When you arrive, you have to call to check-in and they will come over from across the street. There is no on-site reception. It isn't a hostel like you typically find, rather an office space in a rundown building that was converted into multi-person shared rooms. The Wi-Fi works well.

The Location

So the location is quite good. You can see the Aljunied MRT station from the building. It is also on a block with a number of food stores and restaurants. Its location is one of its few positive attributes.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The bedroom is very basic but quite fine -- it's pretty small for six beds but comfortable enough for a night or two. The air conditioner was leaking water down the wall during our stay. There is no place to put your bags. You get a locker -- they call it an "oversized" locker, but it isn't. You will get your daybag in there but not a large backpack. The one pillow supplied is pretty hard. The bedding is clean and the mattresses are pretty supportive and comfortable.

The bathroom is a long hallway with sinks with small toilet or shower rooms off it. The tiles and fixtures look quite new but the rooms are very small and the toilets don't flush. A pail is supplied, which you fill to flush the toilets.

Common Spaces

The second floor has the lounge space with sofas and a dining table, but there is no air conditioning in any spaces other than bedrooms. The third-floor lounge area is storage for old chairs. There are washers and dryers but they are the dirtiest machines. There is no fridge or stove on the third floor, so you have to go down to the second floor.

It isn't the worst hostel, but it is low on atmosphere, so it is just a place to sleep and put your bags while you spend your money on other things. It is as social as you want to be with your roommates.

the only nice thing about this hostel is its location.
98SG is a decent enough place to put your feet up for a few days. It has all the basics of a general hostel and the young man running it is certainly kindly and reasonably helpful, if a bit on the timid side -- which is strange for someone running a hostel. The Location The location is quite ideal, as the hostel is a two-minute walk from a sky train station, which makes it a good location. This is simply because there is a fairly superior transportation network in Singapore, starting with the sky train. From a tourists perspective, it takes you everywhere. There are also a number of restaurants at the base of the hostel which are quite good. Locals spend lots of time here sipping Tiger beer and chowing down (try the intestine soup). There is a 7-11 a three minute walk away as well. Rooms and Bathrooms This place actually only has dorm beds in roughly six rooms over two floors. The beds themselves are decent enough. The quality of the showers is a blessing if you have been around the rest of Southeast Asia for awhile, and there are pay washing machines and kitchens on each floor. The overall cleanliness is pretty good. Common Spaces The common spaces are ideal from a hostelers' perspective. On each floor there is a table in the center room (what more do you want)? On the first floor there is also a TV with a couch and chairs and a DVD booklet filled with some prime choices that are free to view. Summary Overall it is a decent hostel in most respects (despite the pricey deposit for the room key). There are only so many beds available and only so much space which gives it a cozy, lived in feel which is quite nice. The owner tries to quiet things down by midnight so as to not keep people awake in the adjoining rooms, and everything you need is within a block or so. We would have no qualms about going back there.
