The Hostelz.com Review
Sleepy Hollow Adventure Backpackers is the natural choice of those seeking peace and quiet with friendly company. It is run by a couple who are assisted by receptionists, who will eagerly provide information on the area. Breakfast is provided for an extra charge. The owners understand the needs of backpackers, being themselves keen world travelers, and they also run a company called Wylde Ride which offers rafting and bicycling tours.
The Location
Sleepy Hollow Adventure Backpackers is a large 1940s house and garden surrounded by a security fence at 80 Leinster Road, Scottsville, a prosperous residential suburb about two kilometers south of central Pietermaritzburg, which many consider unsafe at night. Guests and their vehicles obtain access through the rear gate via a combination-operated secure entry system with a separate combination for the gate and the house door.
The hostel is easy to find by private vehicle, whether approaching from the freeway or Pietermaritzburg city center. There is parking within the property for around half a dozen cars, and at exceptionally busy periods it might be necessary for some guests to park on the street, which is also free of charge. Guests without their own vehicles usually would need to walk from the centrally located Pietermaritzburg train and bus stations or take a taxi. There is a large supermarket selling a full range of groceries as well as restaurants at Scottsville Mall, a short walk from the hostel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There is one multi-bed, mixed-sex dorm and several double rooms, although some of the rooms are permanently occupied by students. Tent campers use the lawn. There are room locks, and keys may be requested but there are no lockers (management can arrange to store valuables).
There are several mixed-sex bathrooms inside the house with showers and bath tubs and an outside bathroom for use by campers. There is space to change in the shower area, and there are hooks for clothes and soap dishes. A peculiar knack seems to be required in order to heat the campers’ shower.
Common Spaces
The hostel is clean and tidy. There is a reasonably well equipped kitchen with stove, microwave oven, and refrigerator. There are several common areas inside the house, including a lounge and a dining room with a large dining table and chairs which also houses a pay-as-you-go internet computer. There are several covered areas open to the elements with seating on the exterior of the house as well as a large tub used as a swimming pool. Smoking is not permitted in the house. Whether smoking were a problem there would depend on the consideration given by smokers to nonsmokers. The students are quiet and considerate, and it would be fair to regard this as a quiet rather than a party hostel. There is a book exchange.
Summary
Sleepy Hollow Adventure Backpackers is recommended for its reasonable rates and safe, comfortable accommodation in a relaxed setting. The tours which management offers are said to be good.

Wonderful place Sleepy Hollow is absolutely a very nice backpackers. The staff are friendly and because all of them have lots of travel experience they are able to give you many good advice along the way. Me and my friend stayed there for five nights, and beside the one night we got for free, we got a free ride to Howich (because they were going there anyway), and a free ride to Durban. A couple of days later in Durban we got a phone call from one of the staff who offered us a ride to Coffebay because she was going there anyway. I mean, that's service! If you planing to stop in Pietermaritzburg, Sleepy Hollow is a place worth visiting! — Lasse , Denmark (2009-11-11)
