The Hostelz.com Review
Red Roofs Inn in Riga is located right in the old city center of Riga behind a beautiful church. The building is welcoming and clean and you’ll find the reception downstairs whereas you’ll have to climb two flights of stairs to arrive at the actual hostel (no elevator). The building is in an area with lots of small restaurants, cafes, and shops. The reception is staffed twenty-four hours so there is no curfew to deal with.
The Location
The hostel is reasonably priced and has an excellent location right in the old city center. It is easily accessed by public transport, the central railway station and the central bus station are within five minutes' walking distance. Everything in the old city center can be reached on foot -- not only the sights but also most clubs and bars, which makes the hostel a perfect base for a night out in town without having to drive or walk a long way to get back to your bed.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are clean but very tiny; linen and towels are provided. Due to the location in a quiet backstreet, you’ll have no problems falling asleep. Bathroom facilities are basic but clean and well-kept.
Common Spaces
There is a common area in front of the reception with a comfortable coach and lots of magazines and travel brochures to read; you can also use the computer with internet access or connect to the free wireless internet with your own mobile device. There is also a breakfast room and a conference room, breakfast is not included in the price. The staff are happy to help you with your travel plans and can organize tours. You can also do your laundry for a small fee and they store your luggage for free. The atmosphere is friendly but more like a hotel than a hostel. You won’t get to meet too many other travelers because the common space is not very welcoming to hang out for a long time since it is right in front of the reception and there is no common kitchen. It is much quieter than a lot of other places.
Summary
Overall, this is a good choice if you prefer a rather calm hostel in the city center.

Great mostly empty, would be a nightmare full For three rooms -- one with six beds, one with eight, and one with ten (or maybe it was twelve or fourteen -- it was large) there is a total of one men's bathroom/shower and one women's bathroom. They are connected so you cannot use a toilet while someone else showers. The rooms are also all connected so in order to get to my room (the six-bed) I had to have two keys -- one to the huge room and then a second to mine. I was the only one staying in this room the first night, and the large room had a group of less than six. It was still unpleasant waiting for the restroom and I cannot imagine what it would have been like full! The second night I was moved to the eight-bedded room and there were two other women there with me. This time I needed only one key but the room was also connected to the six-person room, which now housed one male. This was fine, just confusing and it wouldn't have felt safe if both rooms had been full. Overall, the hostel has a great location and was fairly clean. Wouldn't stay here again though -- just in case it was any busier, the bathroom situation would be miserable! — Daphne , USA (2008-09-16)
