The Hostelz.com Review
Albergue Juvenil Madrid Hostel is very unique in its design, modern, and well maintained. Due to its size, it's not a very social place, but it is well located, clean, and has all the amenities you'd expect in a quality hostel.
The Location
The hostel is located a short walking distance from a central metro station. It is in a safe area, within the downtown area of Madrid. The airport is accessible by metro, thus making it very easy to get to the hostel if you're flying in, and for the price of a metro ticket.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are clean and the beds comfortable. There are coin-deposit operated lockers for each occupant. For a reason that escapes us, the lights in the room can't be turned on unless you slide your room card in a slot, which can sometimes get tedious. The bathrooms are modern, seem newly renovated and are being kept very clean. We stayed in a dorm room with an en-suite bathroom that had the shower and the toilet in separate stalls, which is very practical as several people can use different parts of the bathroom at the same time.
Common Spaces
There are several common spaces, each one serving a different purpose. First, there is a kitchen, in which a relatively varied free breakfast is served every day. There is the lobby area downstairs that also has a computer with free internet access. There is another internet room, that has both free Wi-Fi and desktops with free access. There is also a movie projection room, but we have not stayed enough time to see it used. Overall, there are many common places, but it is hard to socialize due to the size of the hostel and the volume of people passing through each one. This is not the fault of the hotel management or the building's layout -- we have found that many large hostels seem cold and groups of people seem fragmented.
Summary
Overall, this is a very good hostel to stay in. If you're traveling alone, you might find it a little austere, however, there are several common places you can hang out in. Otherwise, everything is newly renovated and clean, which entirely makes up for the lack of atmosphere.
