The Happy Hippo Backpackers lodge is the latest venture by Micky and Michelle Brooks, owners of the legendary Hippo Hide Backpackers lodge located on the Berea Ridge above the city of Durban. The Happy Hippo Backpackers lodge will offer the same wonderful experience that hundreds of international budget travelers have experienced at the famous Hippo Hide.
Born from a passion for traveling, the Happy Hippo is finally opening it’s doors! The legacy of the Hippo Hide has been passed on to this unique and amazing lodge.
Situated approximately 500m from Durban’s best beaches and right next to uShaka Marine World, you couldn’t ask for a better setting. Durban’s first purpose built backpackers hostel for the discerning budget traveler, welcomes you to come and enjoy state of the art facilities.

Very spacious. Lots of room to move around. Very big dining room. Very big living room. Very big bathroom. Very big rooftop and bar where you can have a drink, watch television, and just sit and relax in a large sitting area. Excellent location in the central part of the city. Close to everything. Just a few minutes walk from the beachfront. Free tea and coffee all day. This is truly the place to stay whenever you are in Durban.

It is located in a big warehouse conversion so had plenty of space and a big open lounge. The staff are friendly as well.We had a 4-bed dorm with own ensuite and it was very clean, the shower pressure is strong and there's a rooftop bar as well.Location, it's at the end of the beach, very near uShaka and the shops there and the beach, 2 mins walk which was great. But quiet at night time, no shops outside.
