The Hostelz.com Review
HI - YHA Birdoswald Hostel has plenty of atmosphere to say the least. In addition to being housed in an old Victorian castle, the rest of the grounds are the site of the old Birdoswald Roman fort! The hostel retains a pretty quiet mood, and is a popular place for families and Romanophiles.
Location
This countryside hostel should be easy to locate. From Gilsland take the B6318 across the river and west for just a little over a mile. Turn left and head south for about half a mile. The road will bend to the right, the hostel is the Victorian castle-farmhouse on the left. Reception is normally open until 10 p.m.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Although the hostel has an historic exterior, the interior is very modern and comfortable. Bedrooms are spacious compared to other hostels. You may find bathrooms a bit on the small side.
Common Spaces
The dining area does double duty as the common room. The kitchen -- spacious as well -- is also well-outfitted with cooking equipment, minus a few pot covers. Being a less-frequented rural hostel, you may have some luck actually finding unspoiled food items in the "help-yourself" cupboard, and note that the patrons and management do a good job removing perishables before they spoil. A laundry room with a coin-op washer and dryer are at your disposal if the weather turns. The hostel has no internet access and no breakfast.
Summary
For Roman history buffs who want some affordable peace and quiet during their travels, Birdoswald Roman Fort is certainly worth consideration! Rates at Birdoswald are decent, comparable to other hostels in England and Scotland, but not quite as competitively priced as those in Wales.
