The Hostelz.com Review
The Beijing Far East International Youth Hostel is a part of the Far East Hotel and therefore incorporates the little luxuries of a hotel, such as daily room cleaning, but is still a hostel with cheap dorms and a basic kitchen.

The dorm rooms are simple rooms of four single beds (not bunks) and are therefore quite spacious. You're given a locker in your room and the room needs an electronic credit card-type key so your valuables are quite safe and secure. If you don't want the dorm beds in the basement you can check into the singles and doubles in the hotel in the floors above or across the road in the rooms surrounding a typical Chinese courtyard. Around this courtyard you will also find the Traveler's Den, which is a cozy, relaxed restaurant serving very good Chinese and Western food.

The internet room also leads off the courtyard -- there are two computers here to surf the net for free and a telephone to call home. The internet here is a bit slow, so if you prefer a faster connection, the internet in the bar/TV room in the basement of the hotel is an option, though not free. This room is very large and quite impersonal but offers hours of entertainment. They have a great DVD collection, which you can watch for free on the huge TV with a powerful sound system. But if you have a bit of energy there is also foosball and billiards to play for a reasonable price.

The location of this hostel is great, but a bit difficult to find at first as it is in a small hutong (alleyway/street) but it is a lively, busy street with restaurants and shops spilling out into the street. Walking down here is entertainment in itself. The hostel is a fifteen-minute walk from a metro stop and about thirty minutes walk from Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.

Brilliant
Stayed from the 29.01.08 to 03.02.08 and 12.02.08 to 14.02.08. We have just come back from sightseeing some of China and visiting friends in Wuhan. At the start of our break we decided to stay here using the hotel/hostel as a base, which was an excellent decision as it was within the heart of an old community and was very close (walking distance) to the touristy places. As we arrived, we were greeted by very friendly staff and a vibrant and colourful lobby area (this, when you have been on the go and tired, the original first impressions meant a lot!). We went to our room, which was very clean, furnished to a good standard, with white bed linen, extra blankets, (we arrived when China was having the worst weather for fifty years!) and a hot shower. If you have been traveling for a period and not had the opportunity to have a bath in a while or you need the heat to warm your bones, the forth floor rooms seem to have baths, at least room 406 did -- these are more expensive though. Do not get taken by the Tea House Scams, the people who take you on this scam are very sweet and unwittingly persuasive. Trust me, I am not generally the type to get taken but on this occasion my Britishness to be polite cost dearly. When you are approached by anyone who wants to practice their English or is a student. Say No!

this hostel is absolutely awesome! it has western standard. there is nothing bad you can say. the location is great -- you can walk to the most important sights like the forbidden city and tian'man square. so if you're trying to find a more than decent hostel, you should book this one and you won't be disappointed!

Been there twice now, superb place to stay. There are four bedroom dorms (on the opposite side of the hutong) and six bedroom dorms available, a homely bar that has draft Beijing Beer, and they can make a small selection of Western food if you're feeling homesick. There's also two computers for free internet access (limited to thirty minutes). Inside the Far East Hostel building, there's a small shop that sells almost everything you'll need, and an incredibly helpful tourist information desk. If weather permits then you can go out into the hutong, buy the beers from the small shop just next to the hostel (to the left if you're leaving the Far East Hotel building, the couple own a little dog that keeps the hutong safe for everyone) and sit out in the little step on the bar side. It's an excellent gathering place, and much more fun that being in the courtyard or downstairs watching DVDs

Great hostel for meeting people especially the courtyard area. Dorm rooms were simple and a little dusty but sheets were clean, as were the communal showers. Drawback was having to walk across the courtyard to go to the toilet, especially as alot of people gather there in the evening. Free but slow internet -- faster if you want to pay. Good tour booking facilities -- informative but not pushy. Great location -- walk to Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City.

Perfect. An easy walk from Tiananmen, twenty-five cent beer on the stoop, amazing staff, surpisingly comfortable and clean beds, pick up and drop off from the airport was a huge plus and the tour of the great wall was amazing. As a tip -- do the three-hour trip that leaves at sin a.m. -- not the Badalng section but the one thats way out -- more natural and there's a wicked fun zip line across a lake at the end. Avoid the downstairs bar before eleven p.m. A small Tsing Tao starts at 10RMB, but after eleven p.m. you can get two big ones for 2RMB. Doesn't make sense to me, but whatever. Big ones are always cold and 2RMB at the store next door where the cute European ladies congregate. God love em! Definitely going back.

Good place. It had a lot of character, the location was good and the staff were helpful (special thanks to Lee Fao Yung for her help). My room was a bit musty, but overall I was happy with my stay.

I was there in May of 2004 and stayed upstairs in a two-bed room for two nights and downstairs in the hostel for six nights. The hotel room I was in was $25 a night; note one of the pictures on this Web page. The hostel was about $6 a night and shared with three other people. Yes, the location was good, about a 15-minute walk to Tiananmen Square, through a lot of small streets and alleys; it's easy to get lost. People are very friendly, rooms are clean, beds are comfortable and there is an Internet Cafe in the lower level, within the hostel part of hotel. I used the washer and dryer and the dryer took four hours to dry clothes. The showers and bathroom were good. I stayed in the hotel side but there were beds across the street too; check out both sides. Think with any hostel, it matters who you room with that can make the difference and for the most part I was fortunate about that. Bottom line, I would stay there again and recommend it.

This place is one of Beijing's best-kept secrets. Great rates, great location, great staff and great booking service. There's plenty to do at night in either of the bar areas, and the new restaurant serves great food. I've stayed here five times and am going back for more!
