The Hostelz.com Review
Location
HI - YHA Llanddeusant Hostel is in a wonderfully pastoral location in the Brecon Beacons, but that may also make finding it a bit of a difficulty. From the A4069, turn off at Pont-ar-llechau, cross over the Afon Sawdde and immediately turn right for Twynllanan. In the center of Twynllanan, make a sharp right and an immediate left and head for Llanddeusant. After about a quarter mile, a road intersects from the right, drive straight through. About a hundred meters after this intersection the road now forks, take the right fork this time. Ignore all other driveways from here and this should bring you to Llanddeusant. The hostel is at the center of the village.
Common Areas
Cozy is the word that best describes the hostel in Llanddeusant, and if you've been outside walking or riding all day in the rain, that's exactly what you want! Staff working here are very friendly -- they may even serve you a spot of tea if you arrive a bit bedraggled and road-weary! There's a drying room right at the entrance to lay all your wet clothes and boots -- it takes a bit longer for items hanging further from the heat, but it works. The bedrooms are clean -- the mattresses may be a bit on the thin side but the comforters are awesome! The kitchen and dining areas are well-kept, which is good since the local pub shut down and the nearest one is now five miles away. The dining area blends into a comfortable common room where you can probably find a little reading material for after your meal. Be careful in the toilets, though -- they're clean and they work just fine but they're about the size of a small closet, and you could actually bash your knee trying to open the door to get out!
The patrons here are generally families and outdoor enthusiasts, and as such the hostel has a very friendly, quiet atmosphere. In the shoulder and off-seasons it's likely that the YHA Llanddeusant hostel could be the perfect getaway for those seeking solitude.
Summary
For the budget traveler seeking a taste of the Brecon Beacons, and possibly a little solitude, the YHA Llanddeusant hostel is certainly a welcoming place to stay. And for those trekking cross-country, it's an even more welcome way station along the trail! Rates at the YHA Llanddeusant hostel compare very favorably to other hostels in Wales and England.
