The Hostelz.com Review
HI - YHA Telscombe Hostel is a tiny, yet functional hostel situated in the South Downs. Staffed by one, the hostel is surprisingly comfortable if not somewhat isolated. That said, there is nothing exceptional about this hostel, unless cramped and cozy is your cup of tea.
The Location
Telscombe is hidden away, and not the easiest hostel to locate, though once found it does provide a suitable base for exploring the South Downs. Surrounded by sheep farms and across the street from a stallion breeding operation, there is plenty of opportunity for long walks and exploring the nearby white cliffs. That said, this hostel feels more remote than it actually is and is nothing special beyond being a stopping point to more interesting places. There neither nightlife nor pubs, restaurants, and shops within the immediate area and driving is an absolute must.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorm rooms are mixed-sex double bunks, and in-essence they are private rooms with in-room sinks. Beds are comfortable, but space is limited. Showers and bathrooms are shared and adequate, but rather dated and dingy. There is little privacy.
Common Spaces
The self-service kitchen is good. Cookware is good, as is diningware. There are a handful of range tops and adequate refrigerator space. That said, the kitchen can become cramped with more than one chef. The dining room is small, and the reading room a joke, ha! This is where the hostel really fails -- there is little space in the common areas, making for many uncomfortable English moments. Meeting other travelers is not a problem, but meeting them head-on, face to face is sheer awkwardness. There is little privacy and common spaces can be difficult to negotiate (psychologically). However, the hostel almost makes up for this by having a tiny (closet) office where you can purchase a fair number of food items and treats -- a bit of comfort food never hurt. There is no internet.
Summary
This is good hostel for one night, but beyond that, it's a pass. The lodging is comfortable, but far from exceptional. Breakfast is not included.
