The Hostelz.com Review
The charming HI - YHA Marloes Sands Hostel is perfect for those who love getting away from it all. A former farmhouse and its outhouses have been transformed into basic but comfortable budget accommodation just a short walk along the path to the stunning beach of Marloes Sands.
The Location
Marloes YHA is situated about a mile outside Marloes Village in South Pembrokeshire. It is well signposted and easily accessible for drivers (plenty of parking in courtyard) and "bussers." If traveling by bus, it is recommended to travel on towards Martin's Haven after the stop "Marloes" and ask the driver to drop you off at the junction to the youth hostel. From here it is a much shorter walk than from the village. The hostel itself is about five minutes' walk from the famous Pembrokeshire Coast Path and the beautiful Marloes Sands. Bird resort Skomer Island is a good day trip from the hostel if you fancy it -- just walk to Martin's Haven and take the boat over. It's a stunning island to explore.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms are mostly in the outhouses and their names remind one of what they used to be used for -- the female dorm is called "Hen House"! The rooms are spacious enough, beds quite comfortable -- but there are no individual bedside lights, so reading in bed can be a bit problematic. There are no lockers in the rooms, but in this rural location one does feel very safe regardless.
There is running water in the rooms. The shower rooms and toilets are generally clean and tidy. The shower could be a little difficult to get to the right temperature, but you'll soon gets the "knack" for it. As the shower is on a raised platform from the rest of the floor, it is possible to actually dry off properly before getting dressed -- a rarity in most hostel showers in the U.K. There are two showers for six beds -- we never had to wait our turn.
Common Spaces
The self catering kitchen is very well equipped and spacious. People can sit around the numerous large tables while others cook at the same time -- it doesn't feel cramped. There are plenty of cooking possibilities but just two sinks, so there can be a washing up queue at times. Directly behind the kitchen, partly separated by a wooden room divider, there is a very cosy sitting area -- there are books and games for your use as well. There is a dining room and another lounge with large sofas, a fireplace, and more games in the main farm house building. This hostel has a very cosy feel that makes hostelers happy to socialise together -- the absence of a noisy TV room is a very positive experience.
Summary
Obviously, if you need a buzzing night life, then this is not the place for you (the village pub isn't exactly the "high life." But if you are looking for a quiet place that will let you unwind and maybe step back in time a little, then you will be very happy here.
