The Hostelz.com Review
Heb Hostel might just be one of the nicest in Scotland and is an excellent option for anyone who’s made it all the way to the Isle of Lewis. The manager lives on-site in a cottage at the back of the hostel, so if you need any assistance it’s easy to find her.
The Location
Stornoway, where this hostel is located, is a small town so this hostel is central to everything. It’s within walking distance of the ferry terminal and the bus station. Most tourist sights on Lewis are reachable by public buses but there are also tour companies in town (near the hostel).
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorm rooms are separated into female, male, and mixed, and are quite spacious. There is more than enough space for everyone’s backpack even when rooms are full, and there is a locked drawer for everyone under the beds (bring your own lock). Some bathrooms are en-suite (one even has a huge soaker tub) and all are very clean and well-maintained. There is ample space to change and stow your gear while showering, but hot water can run out if a lot of people are showering in a short span of time.
Common Spaces
There is a large, well-equipped kitchen with an eating area, and lots of space to store your food. There is a separate common room with comfortable couches, wood stove, and television as well as a couple of computers with free internet access. There are games and DVDs you can borrow, and free Wi-Fi access is provided throughout the hostel. There is a book exchange and lots of tourist information is available.
Summary
Heb Hostel is a lovely home-away-from-home while you’re on Stornoway. And you can’t beat that wood stove when the temperature outside drops!
