Lucky D's is a colorful and vibrant hostel in the center of San Diego with a large variety of restaurants, bars, and shops nearby. The facilities are excellent and there are many freebies including internet access, breakfast every day, and evening meals three days a week.
The Location
The hostel is prominently located on the corner of 8th Avenue and Market Street in the Gaslamp Quarter -- San Diego's premier dining and entertainment district. You don't even need to leave the building for a night out as Lucky D's has its own bar and grill on the ground floor with a rock ‘n roll theme and reasonably priced meals and drinks. There is a 7-Eleven supermarket five minutes' walk away, while the local buses and trolley are conveniently close for speedy travel around the city.
Common Spaces
Lucky D's has a large common room (at night, a party room) with comfy sofas and cable TV -- it's a great place to chill and meet other travelers. The kitchen is spacious and clean with plenty of seating and food storage space. There are a few computers available with fast internet or alternatively you can connect via Wi-Fi -- both options are free. Lastly, there is a laundry room with complimentary washing powder. The hostel has original and stylish decorations throughout that give it a cheerful warm feel. Every night there is a fun activity organized by the hostel such as a movie night with free popcorn or a pub crawl in the Gaslight Quarter.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Compared to the rest of the hostel, the dorms are quite plain with just bunk beds and lockers in the rooms. A big plus is that there are only four beds per dorm so you should get a good night's sleep. There are also private rooms available with a mini-fridge and TV. The bathrooms are spotless with plenty of basins and good hot showers with space to change.
Summary
Lucky D's is one of the better hostels we have stayed at, and should be your first port of call when visiting San Diego. The prices of dorms and private rooms are a bargain, considering the excellent facilities, friendly travelers, and extras such as free meals.
