The Hostelz.com Review
Lafayette International Hostel offers all you need while your stay in NYC -- relatively easy access to/from lower Manhattan, stores, and take-out restaurants, and economical fare.

The Location

It is a bit complicated to get to the hostel from Manhattan. First take subway A or C (‘to Brooklyn’) to Hoyt-Schermerhorn station (this is the most difficult part in remembering/asking someone). Then change to G Line to Bedford and Nostrand. When you get out of the station, check the street name and number -- sometimes especially when it is dark, you will easily lose direction. The address is 484 Lafayette Avenue (this is a broad street). If you find someone to ask, ask for the closest KFC around there -- it is at the intersection near a Chinese restaurant and the hostel is in a couple of buildings away from that KFC. Unfortunately there are no obvious signs of the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are several types of rooms. The six-bed female room has a fireplace (that does not have fire), three room lights, a shelf, two side tables and chairs, a stand mirror, and a standing hanger where you can hang your towels or small laundries. Some rooms have extra room/space and bed(s) for someone who wants privacy. There are several lockers in the corridor where you can store your valuables, but you need to bring your own padlock.

There is one bathroom on the second, third, and fourth floor but not on the first floor. The third floor bathroom adjacent to the common room does not have a shower, so there are only two showers and three toilets at the hostel. The bathrooms and the kitchen are cleaned by the owner every day or occasionally as needed. But the cleanliness largely depends on the people who stay at the hostel!

Common Spaces

Common room is a bright and cozy space with a mini kitchen. There is a flat screen TV, long work desk, sofas, and a coffee table where people gather and relax. The kitchen has a fridge, a toaster, water boiler, sink, and kitchenware. There is one public computer on the second floor but there is also free Wi-Fi so you can use your laptop. You can also borrow a phone from the owner that is free for even a long distance call. The corridor and the stairs are very narrow so it can be hectic when carrying large suitcases or bags.

Summary

This hostel is a totally economical and comfortable place to stay with a friendly owner/staff and clean linens and towels. The drawback of this place is the slightly complicated and rather long access from/to Manhattan (about thirty minutes to/from midtown Manhattan, and the hostel is located about a minute's walk from the nearest subway station). The neighborhood is pretty littered, so pay some attention when you walk about the neighborhood for groceries or to eat out late. The hostel's website does not mention the small service fee to pay by credit card as well as the driving service to the airport driven by the owner/staff for a fee.

3  Nice place to live, you get what you've paid for. I did appreciate the hospitality of the manager (front desk person) there. I recommend that hostel to backpackers, you won't regret staying there.  , US ()

3  on their website it specifically states that there is a weekly rate for students. Once I made my reservation, I was informed that the weekly rate does not exist. I will not be keeping my reservation here.  , United Sates (Nashville) ()
